Description

Position Overview

  • Reporting to the Estimating Manager, the Estimator uses estimating software to perform quantity take offs, cost analysis, sub-trade negotiations, competitive bid management and document control. The Estimator supports full-cycle estimating activities for preparing hard bid, cost plus and design-build estimates.

Responsibilities and Primary Tasks

  • Prepares complete estimates for projects (full cycle bid process), including analyzing specifications, proposals, and other documentation.
  • Assists in devising potential bid strategies for competitive tender projects, provides technical input regarding project and contract risks.
  • Accurately determines scopes of work and conceptual estimates by drawing on experience, reviewing proposal specifications, drawings and attending pre-bid meetings.
  • Calculates complete takeoff of scopes of work, including material quantity requirements from engineering drawings based on first principles estimating .
  • Assists in review of final estimate to ensure alignment with project schedule and cost goals.
  • Assists with design review options and recommends best solution based on cost, engineering quality, or availability of materials.
  • Identifies risk issues and the order of magnitude.
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of local construction materials and techniques.
  • Recommends new approaches and ideas to drive continuous improvement within the Estimating department.
  • Related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or combination of relevant experience and education .
  • One (1) + years estimating experience in the ICI or civil construction industry.
  • Demonstrates strong understanding of first principles estimating methodology.
  • Experience preparing estimates for civil construction including earthworks, utilities and structural concrete, and/or all manner of buildings construction including wood frame, steel frame, steel stud, concrete tilt-up, etc.
  • Knowledge of HCSS Heavy Bid Estimating Software or similar, familiarity with CAD and MS Project Suite.
  • Demonstrated history of successful bid results in a deadline driven, fast-paced environment.
  • Legally eligible to work for any employer in Canada.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Previous estimating experience with a local, mid-tier civil general contractor.

Work Environment

  • The Estimator works out of the corporate head office and is occasionally required to travel to off-site construction facilities and project sites.
