About the job

European Power Market Analyst

About Permutable

Permutable is a UK-based artificial intelligence and market intelligence company building data and quantitative products for global financial markets. We transform large volumes of multilingual news, economic, market and alternative data into structured intelligence and signals for institutional investors, trading desks and other market participants.

Our work sits at the intersection of energy markets, quantitative research and AI. We develop proprietary datasets and systematic signals across commodities and global macro, turning complex real-world information into measurable and actionable market intelligence.

We are expanding our European power market capabilities and are looking for someone with practical market knowledge to help shape our datasets, research and forecasting products.

About the role

  • Permutable is looking for a European Power Market Analyst with approximately 1–3 years of relevant experience, ideally including at least 12–24 months working directly with power-market data at a utility, consultancy, data provider or trading business.
  • You should understand at least one major European power market and be comfortable using Python to investigate prices and the fundamentals behind them. We are particularly interested in someone who can explain why prices moved, identify which factors mattered, and use data to support their conclusions.
  • You will work alongside our quantitative researchers, AI engineers and product team to evaluate Permutable’s power-market datasets, identify gaps in coverage and investigate whether our AI-derived information provides useful insights into future market developments.

What you’ll do

  • Analyse European power prices and fundamentals, focusing initially on markets you know best.
  • Use Python to investigate prices, demand, generation, outages, weather and cross-border flows.
  • Explain price movements through renewable output, nuclear availability, demand, gas prices and interconnector constraints.
  • Distinguish seasonal patterns and temporary events from persistent changes in fundamentals.
  • Assess whether Permutable’s AI-derived datasets capture developments relevant to power-market participants.
  • Identify coverage gaps, classification errors and opportunities for greater market specificity.
  • Write concise research notes explaining developments, their significance and supporting evidence.
  • Contribute market expertise to product development and client discussions.

What we’re looking for

  • Approximately 1–3 years’ relevant experience, including ideally 12–24 months working directly with power-market data.
  • Solid knowledge of one major European power market, such as Great Britain, Germany, France or the Nordics.
  • Practical Python and pandas experience cleaning, combining and analysing time-series data.
  • Experience analysing power prices alongside demand, generation, outages, weather or interconnector data.
  • Understanding of electricity price formation, including marginal generation and fuel costs.
  • Familiarity with day-ahead markets and their relationship to intraday and forward markets.
  • Ability to explain the drivers of price movements and recognise uncertainty.

Nice to have

  • European gas, carbon, clean spark spreads or cross-border power spreads.
  • Power price forecasting, fundamental modelling or forecast evaluation.
  • ENTSO-E, EPEX SPOT, Nord Pool, EEX or system operator data.
  • Weather, renewable generation forecasts or plant availability data.
  • Alternative data, news analytics, NLP or LLM-derived datasets.
  • Market analysis supporting traders, commercial teams or clients.

  • SalaryCompetitive, depending on experience and European power-market expertise.
