JOB SUMMARY:

The EWP Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the optimization processes within the distribution facility, particularly focusing on engineered wood products like Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) and Wood I-Joists. This role involves managing a team of optimization engineers and technicians, ensuring efficient cutting operations, minimizing waste, and optimizing inventory usage. The Optimizer Supervisor will work closely with production, logistics, and sic teams to enhance overall operational efficiency and support continuous improvement initiatives.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to visit job sites, retail stores, Headquarters facility, and/or other locations as needed.
  • Must be able to obtain a forklift certification.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents and respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style/format and present to management, public groups, and/or board of directors.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Utilize company point-of-sale system (MAC21), Microsoft Word & Excel, and other 3rd party software applications at a basic level.
  • Ability to travel occasionally with overnight stays and be available/willing to work overtime per day or per week as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet business needs.
  • Must be available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
  • Must have a current driver’s license and auto liability insurance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or general education degree; and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prolonged periods of walking and working on feet, using tools, and performing repetitive actions that entail frequent bending and stooping.
  • Must be able to use the three-point hold when getting into trucks and/or forklifts.
  • Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds at times, occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds, and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at a time.

Responsibilities

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directly supervises 2 or more employees in the EWP facility. Carries out supervisory responsibilities including assisting with interviewing, making hiring recommendations, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; making recommendations as to reward and/or discipline employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborates with the optimization team to develop cutting strategies that maximize the yield from raw materials.
  • Manages the order flow process received from the stores and strategic accounts.
  • Communicates and coordinates with freight and logistics team after cuts complete and orders have been pulled.
  • Communicates with merchandise services when cuts are completed to administer conversions.
  • Coordinates with various departments to ensure efficient order processing, inventory management, and timely delivery of products.
  • Inspects products prior to delivery to ensure cutting and selection is correct from orders received from the stores and strategic accounts.
  • Performs quality checks on picked items to confirm they meet customer specifications and are free of defects.
  • Generates picking lists and coordinates with warehouse staff to ensure accurate and efficient picking and cutting of orders.
  • Tracks key performance indicators (KPIs) related to cutting processes, such as yield percentage, waste rates, and turnaround times, to assess the effectiveness of current operations.
  • Establishes/enforces SOPs for cutting operations to ensure consistency/quality across all products and regularly reviews and updates these procedures based on feedback and performance data.
  • Works with the EWP teams to analyze defects or issues arising from the cutting process, developing corrective actions and preventive measures to minimize recurrence.
  • Prepares and presents regular reports on optimization efforts, highlighting successes, challenges, and recommendations for future improvements.
  • Communicates between multiple departments to ensure on time delivery.
  • Develops and implements optimization strategies for cutting engineered wood products to ensure that cuts are made efficiently and with minimal waste.
  • Utilizes software tools to analyze cutting patterns and configurations.
  • Employs specialized cutting optimization software.
  • Stays current on optimization software and assist in optimizing as needed.
  • Assists management and headquarters personnel in overseeing the operations of manufacturing, distributing, and inventory control of the EWP facility.
  • Ensures completion of daily procedures, assigned tasks and duties, and customer service by other employees.
  • Assists management and headquarters personnel in developing plans to meet Company goals for the facility.
  • Assists management in managing human resources activities for facility personnel.
  • Manages employees work schedule planning, assets, and inventory to meet coverage needs and labor goals.
  • Assists management in recruiting, directing, and motivating employees to attain the goals of the facility.
  • Assists management in coordinating or overseeing new employee orientation training and ongoing training of facility employees in accordance with Company guidelines and the needs of the facility. Ensures that subordinate staff is properly trained and prepared to provide quality customer service, including communicating company policies and expectations to employees.
  • Listens to and resolves service complaints about the facility and facility employees.
  • Assists other employees in resolving complaints and informs management of customer complaints or requests in a timely manner.
  • Ensures proper loading of merchandise on to delivery vehicles for conformance of loading patterns, weight distribution requirements and to help prevent shifting or damage to materials or products during transit.
  • Actively works to assure the safety and well-being of employees, customers and suppliers. Ensures the cleanliness/appearance of the facility by keeping ground free of clutter including bands, chocks and trash and ensures work areas are clear of trash, weeds and other obstacles for a safe work environment.
  • Ensures facility employees complete required daily inspections/forms to comply with fleet maintenance program and ensures maintenance is performed on vehicles as needed.
  • Ensures that employees follow established policies and procedures, including that proper security measures are in place and carried out by subordinate staff.
  • Ensures that subordinate staff is addressed in a basic manner regarding management’s performance and attendance expectations. Keeps Regional Manager informed of employee concerns, as well as employee performance, attendance or conduct issues.
  • Oversees yard inventory including yard layout and organization of product including unloading of incoming product and proper storage.
  • Conducts accurate cycle and security counts on stock products and compares results to system data and adjusts based on policies and management approval.
  • Compiles and reviews data for order fulfillment from sources such as purchase orders, invoices, requisition, and accounting reports to determine compliance with company control and audit systems.
  • Maintains and ensures compliance with control and audit systems that result in a safe, productive and profitable operation.
  • Monitors inventory of merchandise and manages merchandise levels by ensuring that the proper ordering, receiving, pricing and merchandising procedures are followed.
  • Prepares requisitions, orders, or other documents for purchasing or requisitions new or additional stock items.
  • Provides management with reports regarding the facility as needed.
  • Assists company customers in the store, over the phone, or through other means of communication with product questions and purchases.
  • Makes recommendations to management to improve productivity, reduce losses, maximize equipment performance, and improve quality of service for the facility
  • Attends and participates in meetings and company-sponsored training programs as required
