POSITION OVERVIEW:
The School of Arts & Sciences is searching for a customer service-oriented professional to keep us organized and moving forward on our mission. The Executive Assistant to the Dean provides critical administrative support within the School of Arts & Sciences, ensuring the efficient operation of the Dean’s office. This position serves as the primary point of contact for both internal and external constituents, requiring discretion, professionalism, and excellent customer service skills. The Executive Assistant will play a key role in managing the Dean’s calendar, handling confidential faculty affairs, and supporting the department’s academic and operational functions. Additionally, the role includes coordinating communications, maintaining records, and assisting with special projects to support the School’s overall mission. Working closely with faculty, staff, and external stakeholders, the Executive Assistant will help ensure that the Dean’s office runs smoothly, providing high-level administrative assistance to the Dean and contributing to the success of the School’s academic and operational goals.
This position is part of a dynamic, small Dean’s Office team within the UAS School of Arts & Sciences. The School of Arts & Sciences is the largest School at UAS, comprising the departments of Business & Public Administration, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. Our programs take full advantage of the majesty of beautiful Southeast Alaska, which includes the famed Inside Passage—a majestic array of islands, channels, and fjords abutting coastal mountains, icefields, and glaciers. Our students have opportunities for field study and research in the Tongass National Forest, in intertidal marine environments, and on nearby icefields. Our Juneau Campus is located in Alaska’s capital city, which provides opportunities for student internships in Alaska’s legislature, tourism, and the arts.
The ideal candidate will have exceptional organizational and communication skills with a keen ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Success in this role requires a high level of professionalism, discretion, and the ability to handle confidential matters with care. A strong background in administrative support, including experience with calendar management, customer service, and basic human resources processes, will be key. The candidate should also be comfortable interpreting and applying complex policies, have strong attention to detail skills, and demonstrate the ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team. Experience working in an academic setting including higher education or supporting senior leadership is highly valued. Experience successfully working with people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds is also highly valued.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of progressively responsible experience in or related to administrative operations. Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
