The Faculty of Science and Engineering brings together leading academics and excellent facilities to deliver teaching and research across a broad range of science and engineering areas.

From 1 August 2025 the Faculty will comprise:

  • School of Engineering and Technology
  • School of Environmental and Life Sciences
  • Energy and Environment Institute

Responsibilities

PURPOSE OF ROLE

The Executive Dean of FoSE provides academic and strategic leadership and vision for the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The Executive Dean is the senior executive of the Faculty, and accountable to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for the effective, efficient and transparent leadership, management and administration of the Faculty’s full range of academic and other activities. The Executive Dean is a member of Senate, Chairs the Faculty Leadership Team, and is a member of the University’s Leadership Team (ULT).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To provide vision, and outstanding academic leadership and strategic management of the Faculty - enabling it to contribute fully to the University’s vision and mission, Strategic Plan and objectives. To lead in a visionary manner that inspires the staff and students, promotes and encourages academic excellence, and enhances the University’s stature and academic reputation.
  • To leverage personal academic reputation to best promote and progress the Faculty at a national and international level.
  • Responsible for leading the academic and business planning process for the Faculty, including preparing and delivering an Annual Plan in response to the University planning steer.
  • To ensure that the Faculty meets agreed targets for the recruitment of all categories of students.
  • To prepare the academic and business strategy for the Faculty in accordance with the University’s Strategic Plan and corporate objectives, and to take responsibility for its delivery through effective and efficient operational planning. This will include overseeing the annual process of programme Portfolio review for the Faculty.
  • Develop the Faculty budget, including prioritising resource allocation, making investment decisions, and commissioning relevant business cases. Overall responsibility for financial management of the Faculty’s budget, including controlling pay and non pay spend, conforming with institutional financial policies, working closely with the Director of Finance and finance business partner to ensure the Faculty delivers its business in accordance with its budget.
