EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Municipal Waste Association (MWA)
Location: Ontario (Remote), with some travel for meetings and events
Reports to: Board of Directors (Board)
Hours: Part-Time (up to 25 hours per week or as directed by the Board)
Term: Permanent
Compensation: Commensurate with experience

POSITION SUMMARY

The MWA is seeking a proactive and strategic Executive Director to lead its day-to-day operations and support its mission of continuous improvement and connection in Ontario’s municipal waste management sector. This part-time position (generally up to 25 hours per week) is ideal for a highly organized, self-directed professional who is passionate about public service, engagement, and delivering value to members. This position reports to the Board of Directors (comprised of municipal staff from across Ontario), works collaboratively with Committee Chairs, and supervises a part-time Membership and Communications Coordinator position. The Executive Director plays a key role in developing and implementing strategic directions, advocacy, membership growth and retention initiatives, conference and webinar planning, compliance, and overall operational success.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in a leadership, strategic and/or operational role in a non-profit, association or municipal setting.
  • Knowledge of non-profit governance, compliance, and by-law implementation.
  • Proven ability to engage both municipal and private sector partners.
  • Experience with event planning and virtual platforms for event organization.
  • Grant writing and fundraising experience.
  • Financial literacy and experience supporting budgets and reporting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with digital platforms such as MS Office Suite (including MS Teams), SharePoint, OneDrive and for e-Commerce/Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
  • Understanding of Ontario’s waste management or environmental policy landscape is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and with a small team, while maintaining strong communication and a collaborative relationship with a volunteer Board.
Responsibilities
  • Strategic direction and implementation – alongside the Board, foster a forwardthinking and revitalized organization, bringing future vision and new ideas to modernize and build the MWA through partnerships and advocacy.
  • Connection and advocacy – represent the MWA with key government bodies, regulatory agencies, and sector partners. Engage in emerging issues and maintain strong relationships across all levels of government and industry. Review proposed legislation and provide analysis to the Board and, when required, formal comments on behalf of the MWA membership.
  • Event and conference planning – managing staff/volunteers, planning and delivering MWA’s annual spring and fall conferences, Annual General Meeting (AGM), webinars, and learning events. Manage logistics, speaker coordination, promotions, vendor sponsorships, and follow-ups.
  • Membership growth and engagement (municipal and private sector) – expand MWA’s membership base and provide clear, consistent value to both public and private sector members through communication, support, and programming.
  • Board and Committee support – work with the volunteer Board and Committees to implement strategic goals. Prepare Board packages for monthly meetings, support the Secretary to ensure accurate minutes as per the by-law, and track/follow-up on action items.
  • Financial and administrative support – in collaboration with the Treasurer, oversee budgeting, invoicing, reporting, and maintaining organized financial records.
  • Communications and digital tools – manage internal and external communications including newsletters, website updates, and social media.
  • Grant writing and fund development – identify and secure grant opportunities and sponsorships. Lead application writing, budget development, and reporting to funders.
  • Compliance and By-Laws – ensure compliance with MWA’s by-law, internal governance policies, and relevant non-profit regulations. Support reviews and updates to governing documents as needed.
  • Operational Management – manage one part time employee and coordinate supporting volunteers, maintain accurate member records, respond to inquiries, and oversee the delivery of services and member resources.
