POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Moderator of the Curia/Vicar General, or the archbishop or their designee, the Executive director of Human Resources is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for developing and executing human resource strategy, policies, and practices in support of the mission, values, and goals of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. This individual plays a vital role in fostering a positive, inclusive workplace culture, ensuring compliance with employment laws, and building effective processes and systems to support and provide training opportunities to archdiocesan staff and volunteers. The Executive director will lead a staff of human resource professionals and guide the human resource function across talent management, employee engagement, organizational and performance management, change management, training and development, and compensation within a Catholic, nonprofit setting.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, or related field.
  • At least seven years of progressive human resource leadership experience that includes oversight of the payroll function and strategic evaluation and planning for an industry-standard comprehensive Human Resources function.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, or related field.
  • At least seven years of progressive human resources leadership experience at a large organization with one or more of the following characteristics: Catholic, nonprofit, education, cemeteries, and mortuaries.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Nonprofit operations and the unique needs of decentralized, religious, mission-driven organizations.
  • HRIS systems, payroll systems, and standard office software.
  • Administering self-insurance programs.
  • Integrating generative artificial intelligence into human resource department workflows and organizational development.

Skills in:

  • Leadership and Coaching.
  • Nonprofit-specific human resources training or certification (e.g., Nonprofit HR Certification)
  • Strong written, analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills, with a high degree of emotional intelligence and integrity.

Ability to:

  • This position is based in the Archdiocesan Catholic Center (Chancery Office) in the Mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles; the archdiocese has many locations in Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara Counties in California. This position requires regular travel to the various locations.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to sit for sustained periods of time daily, stand, walk, bend, crouch, reach above and below shoulder level, push, pull, grasp, or twist on an intermittent basis.
  • Utilization of keyboard, phone equipment and other office equipment
  • Exposure to office environment level of noise, temperature, and lighting
  • Busy office environment; frequent interruptions; multiple entities in large, complex, and diverse organization.
    Compensation: $200,000 - $225,00
