Job Description Reporting to the Global Publishing Director, the Executive Publisher oversees the strategic direction and operational management of publishing activities for a substantial journals portfolio across a number of subjects. This leadership position combines P&L management, team leadership, strategic business development and expert network-building to drive growth and innovation in academic publishing. The role involves progressing Open Research growth across the portfolio as well as developing Pay to Read content. What you'll be doing: Develop and execute strategic growth and development initiatives across the portfolio Deliver on the journal portfolio's annual revenue and article volume goals in alignment with budgetary targets In consultation with relevant teams, build and execute acquisition, society contract and new launch strategies Oversee journal performance metrics, publication schedules, and content backlogs Lead and mentor a team of Publishers who may work in a range of locations, fostering a culture of empowerment and accountability Provide objectives, guidance, support and accountability to support your team's success Cultivate strategic partnerships with academic societies and key industry stakeholders Manage high-value, productive society relationships and ensure profitable contract renewals Collaborate with internal stakeholders to drive operational excellence and process efficiency Build and maintain comprehensive market intelligence on competitor activities and industry trends Proactively making new contacts to build beneficial partnerships, including those that lead to acquisition opportunities Keep abreast of global changes around changing publishing practices and business models to ensure the program remains relevant, commercially viable and in pace with market dynamics Support broader organizational initiatives, collaborate with fellow Executive Publishers and Senior Executive Publishers, and deputize for the Global Publishing Director as required Qualifications What we're looking for: Degree in a relevant field and a strong grasp of academic and publishing environments Experience of effective scholarly journals management, strategic journal development and growth plans within Humanities and Social Sciences subject areas would be an advantage, but other backgrounds will be considered Experience of interpreting and applying insight from performance data and other pipeline and financial data Commercial acumen, adeptness with financial plans, compelling proposal preparation Excellent communication skills, oral, presentation and written Experience of working effectively across departments within a dynamic, global organization Resilience, self-reliance, and resourcefulness A self-starter who is eager and ambitious to embrace new opportunities Team player comfortable with collaboration and feedback Aptitude for and/or experience of managing and developing a high-performing team Affinity for global team-working and external partnership opportunities, including flexibility to accommodate diverse time zones and working cultures Openness and ability to undertake work travel, e.g. academic conferences, society business meetings Additional Information What you should know: You must have the right to reside and work in the United Kingdom This role will be blended-working; you’ll work 2 days a week from home and 3 days in our Milton Park, Abingdon UK office. Due to the on-site requirement, we are only considering candidates who are in a close proximity and commutable distance to our office in Oxfordshire.
