The Ministry of Arts, Culture and Status of Women works to improve Albertans’ quality of life through support of cultural development, historical preservation and increased gender equality. The Royal Alberta Museum collects, preserves, researches, interprets, and exhibits objects and specimens related to the heritage of Alberta’s people and natural environment. In collaboration with other branches within Heritage Division, the Royal Alberta Museum (RAM) Branch is responsible for designing and producing galleries, exhibits, and interpretive features for 18 of the division’s museums (including RAM), historic sites and interpretive centres located throughout Alberta. The RAM Branch’s Visitor Experience Unit is instrumental in leading this work.

QUALIFICATIONS CONTINUED

  • Knowledge of and ability to program gallery lighting systems.
  • Knowledge related to installing and maintaining electronics, switches, and motors.
  • Superior ability to work both independently and in a team environment;

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with designers, colleagues, product reps, suppliers, fabricators, and stakeholders.
  • Competency with Windows PC platform software programs including Microsoft Office, and comfort with learning a variety of new computer program software.
  • Self-motivated, strong organizational skills, and ability to coordinate the work related to numerous projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and material handling practices, including those stipulated by Alberta’s OH&S requirements and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
  • Ability to operate Mobile Elevated Work Platforms, forklift, pallet jacks, and maintain necessary certifications.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license and experience loading, unloading, and operating cube vans and 5-ton trucks.
  • Teamwork, collaboration skills and interpersonal skills to work effectively with colleagues, vendors, suppliers, etc.
  • Demonstrated genuine respect of others’ expertise and willing to learn from others.
  • Able to lift and handle 25 kg.

Responsibilities

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

As an Exhibit technician, you are a key member of a multidisciplinary team, responsible for fabricating, building, installing, and maintaining exhibits, galleries, and similar public spaces in at the Royal Alberta Museum and our historic sites around the province. In this role, you apply your creativity, agility, independent judgement, and technical knowledge in several functions related to preparing galleries for new exhibitions, installing and decanting exhibit components of various scales, and maintaining visitor experiences while they are open to the public.
Being a generalist with a degree of technical skills in several areas, you are comfortable with fabrication (carpentry, metalwork), installing exhibit components (cases, plinths, objects) according to plans and elevations, and finishing galleries while following design specifications. You lead your work in collaboration with team members in a multidisciplinary museum environment, where you organize and implement the specially designed components scoped out earlier in the development process.
You possess digital technology skills that position you as the team’s AV champion and knowledge keeper. You maintain various AV systems and equipment (screens, projectors, sound systems, media players), set up and operate gallery lighting systems, and repair simple mechanical and/or low voltage electrical interactives, ensuring that all components are maintain to the highest standards and specifications.

Key responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Working from detailed/measured drawings created by Exhibit Designers, to integrate the plans to assemble build exhibit components such as walls and assembly of exhibit furniture
  • Using standard shop tools (e.g. table saw, band saw, sanders, jointers, etc.) to fabricate and finish exhibit display components and prototypes.
  • Install and disassemble exhibits and other interpretive experiences.
  • Confirm proper installation as per plans.
  • Develop and implement rigging solutions for overhead or aerial display components within an exhibit.
  • Familiarity with Projectors (and projection blending), Digital signage players,
  • Networking equipment, Audio system configuration, Custom-build computer systems and software.
  • Gallery lighting network and control systems,
  • Provide recommendations on constraints and options affecting the budget in the implementation of projects
  • Maintain a safe, tidy workshop environment and maintain tools/equipment as required.
  • Lead and participate in project teams and various committees, as assigned.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned by the Manager and/or Lead Exhibit Technician.
