The DAR is seeking a highly organized museum professional to join the team as our new Exhibition Specialist!
This position, in collaboration with museum staff, will be responsible for all aspects of the exhibition lifecycle, which includes the planning, administration, and implementation of special exhibitions and collection-based installation and rotations throughout the Museum. They will also serve as the exhibition registrar and oversee all aspects of the administrative side of an exhibition from start to finish.
The DAR Museum, located in the DAR’s Washington, DC, headquarters, collects, preserves, and interprets objects used and created in American homes. Using the lens of the varied interpretations of home, we inspire conversations about the diverse American experience, encouraging people to discover common ground.
The museum, which welcomes visitors throughout the year, organizes special exhibitions and educational programming for all ages and maintains a permanent collection of more than 20,000 objects reflecting the material culture and social history of the United States prior to 1840.
The successful candidate will have excellent project management skills, be comfortable managing multiple deadlines, can interact professionally with outside vendors and suppliers, and have a solid understanding of museum exhibit fundamentals.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of 3 years of administrative and project-management experience, preferably in a museum environment.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on gallery experience during installation/deinstallation phases.
  • Able to work well under pressure while still sustaining a high level of detail.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of collections management software required. Knowledge of Proficio by Re:Discovery is helpful.
  • BA in History, Art History, American Studies, or related field is required.
  • Experience with collection management best practices which should include storage, conservation, handling, and display.
  • Effective verbal skills; able to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of the organization and external stakeholders.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in the planning, preparing and management of complex project schedules and budgets.
  • Ability to work independently, handle confidential information with discretion, and adapt to shifting priorities and deadlines.
