Job Description
TRIUMF’s state-of-the-art Machine Shop specializes in translating physicists’ vision into prototypes and one-of-a-kind experimental components. This is often an iterative process in which scientists, designers and machinists work back-and-forth to create unique components that must meet extreme tolerances for vacuum, cryogenics, and high-precision measurement.
TRIUMF Machine Shop is currently in need of a Journeyperson Fabrication/Welder who will be responsible for the fabrication and repair of experimental equipment, instrumentation and systems as partof TRIUMF’s program work.

As our ideal candidate, you are able to work independently and have the ability to exercise good judgement when dealing with complex fabrication issues. Your other qualifications will include:

  • TIG Welding: Expertise in vacuum leak-tight welding for aluminum and stainless steel.
  • MIG Welding: Skilled in high-quality metal inert gas welding applications.
  • Fabrication & Assembly: Proactive assessment and execution of complex assemblies.
  • Soldering: Proficient in both silver and soft soldering techniques.
  • Helium Leak Testing: Conducting precise helium leak checks on assemblies.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adherence to industry safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Continuous Professional Development: Commitment to ongoing learning and skill enhancement.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Fabrication Knowledge: Proficient in advanced fabrication techniques and best practices.
  • TIG Welding Expertise: Strong skill set in aluminum and stainless steel TIG welding.
  • Technical Literacy: Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and CAD models accurately.
  • Effective Communication: Strong interpersonal skills for clear and efficient collaboration.
  • Teamwork & Independence: Capable of working both independently and within a team environment.
  • Safety & Quality Commitment: Dedicated to maintaining high safety and quality standards.
  • Organized Work Environment: Ensuring a tidy, well-organized workspace for efficiency.
  • Shop Protocol Adherence: Following machine and fabrication shop procedures diligently.
  • Orbital TIG Welding: Experience in orbital TIG welding is an asset.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • BCTQ Machinist Red Seal certification.
  • 7+ years experience Welding and Fabricating a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous materials after certification.
    Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
