POSITION: Skills Boost Program Facilitator

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Literacy Society of the North Okanagan is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced educator to facilitate our Skills Boost after-school learning program for students in grades 2–5. These are temporary, part-time, paid positions. Programs run from October to May. The Literacy Society follows the School District 22 calendar for holidays and closures.
The Skills Boost Program is a small-group, inquiry-based program that invites curiosity, exploration, and project work. With groups of 6–12 students (supported by volunteers), facilitators guide student-led projects and help embed literacy and numeracy skills into high interest, hands-on learning. Facilitators are supported by the Literacy Coordinator, and all program materials, supplies, and inquiry kits are provided. Training will be provided to facilitators on the inquiry-based approach and how to use our program kits to foster student motivation, curiosity, and interest in learning.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Accreditation and/or experience in elementary education, child and youth work, or learning program facilitation.
  • Openness to learning and applying a student-driven, inquiry-based approach.
  • Creativity and flexibility in supporting children’s curiosity.
  • An RCMP criminal record check is required.
Responsibilities
  • Build positive rapport with all participants.
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all participants.
  • Manage and maintain the learning environment.
  • Facilitate a safe, welcoming, and positive space for all participants, staff, and volunteers.
  • Guide students through open-ended, inquiry-based projects that embed literacy and numeracy learning in fun and meaningful ways.
  • Encourage creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration by providing choices and supporting student interests.
  • Use program kits and resources to spark curiosity and extend learning.
  • Work cooperatively with the other facilitators and volunteers.
  • Maintain accurate student registration and attendance records.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and caregivers.
  • Communicate regularly with the Literacy Coordinator.
  • Ensure that all health and safety protocols are followed by all participants.
