FACILITIES OPERATIVE APPRENTICESHIP AT FREEMANTLES SCHOOL

The Premises Assistant will work as part of the Site Team to help maintain the school’s facilities to a high standard, ensuring a safe, clean, and well-functioning environment for pupils, staff, and visitors. This role requires the ability to manage daily tasks efficiently, respond promptly to changing priorities, and contribute to the overall upkeep and security of the school grounds.
The position involves a variety of practical duties, including manual handling and regular movement across the site, so a reasonable level of physical fitness is essential.

WHAT TRAINING WILL THE APPRENTICE TAKE AND WHAT QUALIFICATION WILL THE APPRENTICE GET AT THE END?

The successful candidate will obtain a Level 3 Facilities Services Operative Apprenticeship standard qualification
Each apprentice will have their own dedicated tutor who will conduct monthly remote tutorials and reviews, providing continuous support throughout the apprenticeship program. Depending on the apprentice’s needs, the frequency of these sessions may vary.

Responsibilities
  • Support the Site Manager in maintaining school security, cleanliness, and safety.
  • Help plan and complete daily tasks using an iPad, working independently and with the team.
  • Receive, check, and distribute deliveries, keeping the reception clear.
  • Maintain school grounds: litter picking, weeding, sweeping, mowing, and hedge cutting.
  • Learn to maintain building systems and meet Health & Safety standards.
  • Liaise with contractors for routine maintenance tasks.
  • Carry out emergency cleaning and daily housekeeping as needed.
  • Spot and address Health & Safety issues around the site.
  • Perform minor repairs, improvements, and decorating work.
  • Help coordinate and maintain the school minibus fleet.
  • Drive the school minibus occasionally (training provided).
  • Assist with transporting school lunches between sites.
  • Handle unpleasant tasks like clearing drains when required.
  • Support school events: set up rooms, assist visitors, and help with parking.
  • Help maintain the school’s hydro-pool.
  • Assist with site security checks and daily locking up (not the main keyholder).
  • Act as a Fire Marshal during emergencies.
  • Adapt to the changing needs of the school and team.
  • Follow Health & Safety guidelines, use PPE, and report concerns.
  • Understand and follow safeguarding, confidentiality, and data protection policies.
  • Attend school meetings when possible to stay informed.
  • Take part in relevant training (e.g., manual handling, fire safety, tool use).
  • Safeguard and promote student welfare.
  • Uphold school values and inclusive practices.
  • Promote equality and positive engagement with all stakeholders.
