Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure, the Facility Enhancement Specialist will play a key role in building, maintaining and enhancing the Town’s capital building infrastructure. This will involve a combination of physical construction / building maintenance as well as the oversight of third-party contractors.
There are three main streams of responsibilities associated with this position: the first stream will consist of “day to day” maintenance-related tasks and inspections; the second stream will center around traditional construction projects; while the third stream of responsibility will be serving as an advisor/inspector for construction contracts outsourced to third-parties.
What can be done ‘in-house’ versus what is better suited for contracted service providers is a question that this position will have key input on. For added clarity, this position will deal with the physical condition of the Town’s building assets, not the operational and programmable uses of these assets, which will be handled by the Town’s Recreation and Community Services Department.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 10 years of relatable experience
  • Journeyman Carpenter, or a combination of relevant experience with a comparable journeyman trade certificate; along with the ability to practice said trade in the Province of Alberta
  • Strong working knowledge of construction processes, as well as the coordination and sequencing of trades
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team
  • Flexible, resourceful, and able to adapt to a changing environment
  • Ability to identify areas for improvement and take initiative to implement appropriate changes
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license; a driver’s abstract will be requested
Responsibilities
  • Stream #1: Day to Day Maintenance
  • Field, respond to, evaluate and execute work orders that come in from other departments for requests or tasks that involve physical changes to a building asset;
  • Conduct building inspections throughout all Town facilities, and, where necessary, identify and correct noted deficiencies;
  • Serve as the main point of contact for specialized trades (i.e. HVAC, electrical, plumbing) that are required to perform repairs, and conduct maintenance tasks and/or building service enhancements, for the Town’s building infrastructure;
  • Inspect the work of contractors and/or their agents, including site visits and inspections;
  • Familiarize self with the operations of town facilities, and troubleshoot identifiable deficiencies and/or reported problems where necessary.
  • Stream #2: Construction Projects
  • Build stuff, and know things;
  • Undertake construction projects approved by Council that are of a scale suitable for in-house resources;
  • Participate in the construction elements of Town-sanctioned community projects;
  • Participate in the annual budget process by putting forward project proposals that will improve or enhance the functionality and lifespan of the Town’s building assets;
  • Collaborate with, and serve as an advisor to, the Town’s accessibility working group to undertake accessibility improvements to the Town’s building assets.
  • Stream #3: Advisor/Inspector
  • For larger capital projects being undertaken by third-party contractors, the Facility Enhancement Specialist will:
  • review and provide input on construction drawings provided by the Town’s design consultants;
  • conduct walkthroughs and inspections of town construction projects to vet for quality control.
  • Identify and coordinate the installation of green infrastructure components for Town facilities as a way to reduce annual operating costs.
