The Olympic Oval in the Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time Facility Operations Support.
The Olympic Oval is the premier Winter Olympic legacy facility from the 1988 Winter Olympic Games as part of the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Kinesiology. The facility provides programs and services for a number of local, national, and international stakeholders and is home to high performance athletes, world-class high performance programs, and excellent research. The Oval provides a dynamic environment for Faculty of Kinesiology programs including Dino Athletics, Active Living, and various Faculty courses and research initiatives. The Olympic Oval brings international recognition to the University of Calgary through the hosting of major international world class events, the training of Olympic athletes, and ongoing development of high performance programs. Additionally, the Olympic Oval is recognized locally as a major part of the Calgary community providing public skating, events and bookable spaces for various public user groups and entities.
The Olympic Oval is currently seeking someone to join Operations team. The role is part time and requires evening and weekend availability. The Facility Operation Support (part time) reports to the Olympic Oval’s Maintenance Supervisor. The work requires a high level of physical demand in maintaining the facilities. This position requires the ability to think and react quickly in emergency situations, and at times can be a highly stressful position. During peak competition season (October-March), volume of work increases substantially.
This is a recurring part time AUPE position with a variable work schedule, including evening and weekend hours.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for the safe and proper use of all equipment and tools, including, but not limited to ice resurfacers, forklifts, edgers
  • Ensures that all required safety procedures are followed when carrying out tasks
  • Ensures that immediate supervisor is kept informed of activities and progress of work
  • Expected to be in attendance for ice making, maintenance, and ice related events throughout the season
  • Responsible for Artificial ice plant PMs and log sheets
  • Communicates with the Operations team and other Oval staff any requirements needing to be followed to maintain the high quality product expected
  • Pleasantly and respectfully interacts with co-workers, clients, supervisors, coaches and athletes
  • Attends all relevant meetings as outlined by the supervisor
  • Responsible to administer first aid as necessary and to carry out emergency procedures, according to policies set out by Risk Management, to ensure safety for all users
  • Ensures that all duties assigned are carried out in a timely manner, according to set schedules and task timelines
  • Keeps supervisor informed of any deficiencies, issues, changing equipment / building conditions, and other information to maintain a safe and user-friendly building
  • Ensures regular work attendance and punctuality for start and finish of shifts
  • Personal appearance and grooming must reflect the World Class environment of the Olympic Oval

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education
  • Current certification in both First Aid and CPR and you are qualified, comfortable and competent regarding all first aid decisions
  • Your extensive experience and knowledge within a large speed skating/arena environment ensures accurate input to your supervisor regarding changing ice and building conditions
  • You have some experience and/or ice making and maintenance certification
  • Must be able to perform heavy lifting, and manual labour and willing to work at extreme heights
  • A valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required)
