Description

Faculty Positions in Infection Biology, Microbiomics, and Infectious Disease Modelling
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology: Faculty Positions: Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering Division (faculty)

DESCRIPTION

The Bioscience Program in the Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is launching a significant initiative to bolster research in human and animal health. We are particularly seeking ambitious candidates at Assistant Professor rank, although high profile applicants for Associate or Full Professor will also be considered.
Successful candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or a related field, with a robust track record of publications in top-tier journals, and must be eager to pioneer innovative, technology-driven research in Infection Biology, Microbiomics, and Epidemiological Disease Modelling.

Preference will be given to those with expertise and a proven track record in one of the following areas:

  • Host-Pathogen Interactions: Candidates should utilize experimental (cellular/molecular/animal) and Omics methodologies to investigate host-pathogen interaction, immunology and mechanisms underlying host resistance to microbes and viruses, with a particular focus on host genomes and environmental interactions. A proven track record in cutting-edge research on host-pathogen interactions, host immune response mechanisms, vaccine development, or genetics of host responses to infectious agents will be considered.
  • Host-Microbiome Interactions: We seek candidates who will study the role of microbiota in human health and disease, aiming to identify novel microbiome-based therapeutic strategies. Expertise in functional and metabolic analysis of microbiomes using Omics technologies, studying microbial community interactions, and assessing the impact of microbiomes on health is desirable. A track record of experimental manipulation of microbiomes through probiotics, prebiotics, and environmental modifications, with the goal of developing therapeutic solutions such as fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), microbiome-modulating drugs, and personalized medicine approaches is highly valued.
  • Modeling of Infectious Diseases: We seek candidates specialized in the modeling of infectious diseases, such as dengue, coronavirus, and influenza. The ideal candidate should possess a strong background in epidemiology and biostatistics, with expertise in mathematical and statistical modeling techniques including agent-based models, compartmental models, and network analysis. Previous experience in investigating epidemiological characteristics and transmission dynamics of infectious diseases, particularly those relevant to the Middle East, is highly desirable. The candidate should demonstrate a successful track record of interdisciplinary research and collaboration with local or regional public health authorities and international organizations.
  • Vaccinology: We seek candidates with expertise in vaccine development, immunological responses, and delivery systems. Ideal applicants should have experience in preclinical and clinical trials, focusing on diseases relevant to global and Middle Eastern health, such as influenza or coronaviruses. Expertise in next-generation platforms like mRNA vaccines, adjuvants, and cold chain logistics is desirable. A strong record of translational research and collaboration with public health agencies is essential.
