ACADEMIC FLOW CYTOMETRIST

RANK/TITLE: Assistant Professor (1-5 years of experience), Associate Professor (6-10 years of experience), Full Professor (10 years + Experience) (nontenure/Appt. stream)
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Pathology in the Divisions of Hematopathology and Immunopathology in the Section of Laboratory Medicine is seeking an Academic Faculty to serve as Technical Director of the Clinical Flow Cytometry service and develop or continue an academic program in the subject All Divisions in Laboratory Medicine have a strong interest in service, research and education and serve the UPMC Health System comprised of over 40 hospitals and clinics.

JOB DUTIES: Include but not limited to

  • Provide technical directorship of the clinical flow cytometry laboratory to ensure regulatory compliance and quality of patient test results within an integrated multi-hospital clinical service.
  • Develop new assays and troubleshoot assays in response to clinical needs, working closely with Hematopathologists on test requirements.
  • Innovate for interpretations and result reporting, data mining and new technology (e.g., spectral flow cytometers).
  • Provide on-call attending responsibilities including clinical consultations for physicians and healthcare providers regarding test results and interpretations.
  • Actively participate in divisional educational activities
  • Pursue clinical, translational, or basic research.
  • Laboratory-based investigations and entrepreneurial efforts (supportable based on prior accomplishments).
  • Develop and deliver educational content for medical students, residents, fellows, and laboratory staff within the formal rotations, elective teaching, informal teaching, and mentoring settings.
  • Infuse diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in their work style.
  • Participate in trainee evaluations and candidate interviews.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a clinical setting of flow cytometry including leukemia/lymphoma analyses, immunopathology, and esoteric testing is beneficial, together with a proven academic track record of effective communication (written, verbal and presentation).

    · Experience in clinical laboratory quality management to ensure the total testing phase (pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases) is appropriate and standardized across the healthcare system.

  • Expertise in Informatics and its clinical application in Pathology is a plus.

  • Must have a Ph.D. or M.D.
  • Board certification from an approved agency (e.g., ASCP or ABMLI or ASM) is preferred, or the ability to obtain board certification after experiential time.
  • If Ph.D.

Board certification or eligibility within three years by the ASCP or ABMLI or ASM certification board in clinical cytometry.

  • If M.D.,

o Board certification or eligibility in clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology
o Eligible for medical licensure in Pennsylvania is required.

SALARY and BENEFITS:
Academic rank, tenure, and salary will be commensurate with experience. The individual will be a full-time faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, as well as a participant in the UPMC/UPP faculty practice plan.
If an extramurally funded research program is present or to be developed, appropriate transition or seed funding, space, and resources are available.
Distribution of efforts in Service, Research/Academics, and Teaching will be tailored to capabilities and expectations.
