Urban Adamah is an educational farm and community center in Berkeley, California that integrates the practices of Jewish tradition, mindfulness, sustainable agriculture, and social action to build loving, just, and sustainable communities. We provide training programs, educational workshops, and community celebrations for more than 10,000 visitors annually.
The Farmer works under the supervision of the Farm Manager to carry out the day-to-day operations of the Urban Adamah farm. The Farmer plays a critical role in ensuring the farm runs smoothly and efficiently.
The ideal candidate is passionate about sustainable agriculture, enjoys hands-on physical work, and thrives in collaborative team settings. This position provides an opportunity to grow farming skills while contributing to Urban Adamah’s mission.

EXPERIENCES THAT COULD LEAD TO YOUR SUCCESS

  • 1+ year working at a farm, garden, landscaping company or similar outdoor setting.
  • Familiarity with mixed vegetable production, greenhouse growing, tools, irrigation systems, or animal care is a bonus.
  • A strong desire to learn and grow within a farming environment.
  • Experience working with volunteers, groups, or diverse communities.

Responsibilities

The Farmer will be responsible for and provide support with a broad range of operational logistics and procedures.

  • Support crop production, including seeding, planting, weeding, irrigation, harvesting, and post-harvest processing
  • Assist with greenhouse operations, including propagation and plant care
  • Perform animal husbandry tasks, including feeding, cleaning, and general care for goats and chickens
  • Maintain farm infrastructure, such as irrigation systems, fencing, pathways, and tools
  • Support pest and weed management using sustainable farming practices
  • Maintain soil health through turning compost, vermiculture, and cover cropping
  • Assist with supervising volunteers and program participants in farm tasks
  • Ensure farm spaces are clean, organized, and accessible
  • Perform a variety of general farm task

The physical demands listed below are representative of those required to perform the role:

  • Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and crouching for extended periods
  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions (rain, heat, cold, etc.)
  • Performing repetitive tasks, including planting, weeding, and harvesting
  • Operating hand tools, wheelbarrows, and small farm equipmen

This position may be either full-time or part-time, depending on the needs of the farm and the candidate’s availability. Hours may shift seasonally—for example, the role may begin as full-time and transition to part-time. A reduction in hours is likely between November and January, but exact timing is to be determined.

  • Hourly Pay: $25–30 per hour (depending on experience)
  • General farm hours are 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, with some weekend farm chore
