Maine Department of Transportation Salary: $26.17-$36.62 (per hour) (Salary Schedule) - New employees start at step 8 ($35.21) *This includes a 21.5% stipend* Office/Bureau: Maine State Ferry Service Location: Rockland, ME Opening Date: November 5, 2025 Closing Date: November 20, 2025 Job Description: This is a Relief Crew position providing professional services work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of diesel and gas engines and auxiliary equipment on marine vessels. Candidates could be assigned to one of the following vessel routes: Vinalhaven, North Haven, Swans Island or Islesboro. Work involves monitoring all operating propulsion machinery and electrical generating facilities on-board vessels; and inspecting, adjusting, and maintaining machinery in accordance with established operational and safety standards. Performing security functions per the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 as well as provides information and direction to the public as necessary. Must be familiar with Ferry Service Vessel’s and engine room operations. Must be licensed with the USCG as a third assistant engineer or greater or possess a DDE4,000 HP endorsement. Clean and maintain the engine room, auxiliary spaces and various other systems on the vessel. Performs other duties as required by immediate supervisor. Must be in possession of a valid TWIC or be able to get one within 30 days. To be minimally qualified for this position candidates must provide evidence of the following experience: Experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of marine engines and auxiliary equipment. Required to have a current TWIC Card - Transportation Worker Identification Credential Card. Card is provided by TSA -Transportation Security Administration. Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements: U.S. Coast Guard license as a Marine Engineer for the H.P. of largest vessel owned by the State.
