The Fiber Locator is responsible for accurately locating, mapping, and marking the location of fiber optic cables, ensuring the integrity of underground fiber optic infrastructure. The Fiber Locator is a crucial aspect in preventing damage during construction, digging, or excavation projects and for maintaining safety standards. This role plays an essential part in ensuring the safety and reliability of fiber optic systems, helping to prevent damage to these systems while supporting smooth construction or maintenance operations. Location: In Field Job Type: Full- time Schedule: Fixed Overtime: Yes Travel: Within the Footprint Requirements Education: High school diploma or equivalent; some positions may require technical certifications or specialized training in fiber optics. Experience: Prior experience in construction, telecommunications, or a similar field may be preferred. Technical Skills: Knowledge of fiber optic infrastructure, utility locating equipment, and basic GIS (Geographic Information Systems) mapping is a plus. Attention to Detail: Ability to accurately locate and mark fiber optic lines, ensuring the safety and integrity of the infrastructure. Physical Stamina: Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform tasks such as digging, lifting, and walking long distances. Communication Skills: Strong communication skills to work with other teams and document findings clearly. Key Responsibilities Locate Fiber Optic Cables: Use specialized equipment to accurately locate underground fiber optic cables and associated infrastructure. Marking and Mapping: Mark the locations of fiber optic cables on the ground for construction crews, contractors, or other workers to avoid accidental damage during excavation or digging. Field Surveys: Conduct field surveys to gather data about the position and condition of fiber optic cables, providing accurate mapping and records. Safety Compliance: Follow safety protocols and regulatory guidelines while conducting surveys or performing duties to ensure personal safety and avoid cable damage. Coordinate with Teams: Work closely with construction crews, utility workers, and engineers to communicate the location of fiber optic infrastructure and prevent accidents. Documentation: Maintain detailed records of fiber optic cable locations, inspections, and any identified issues or damages for future reference. Troubleshooting: Assist in diagnosing issues with fiber optic cables and work with technicians to help resolve problems. Equipment Maintenance: Ensure that fiber locator tools and other equipment are maintained in good working order. Work Environment Fieldwork outdoors, often in various weather conditions. Possible exposure to construction sites and heavy machinery. Travel to different locations within the service area may be required. Physical Demands Standing, walking, and bending for long periods. Lifting and carrying equipment up to 50 pounds. Working in varying environmental conditions, such as hot, cold, or wet weather.
