QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years’ experience in HSE, Environmental, construction and/or pipeline experience is considered an asset.
  • Degree, Diploma or Certificate in OH&S and/or related education or equivalencies.
  • Experience in commercial vehicle requirements (provincial – NSC / Trucking), is considered an asset.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Responsibilities

ROLE SUMMARY

Based in Edmonton, reporting to the HSE Manager, the HSE Advisor supports all divisions including Civil, Forestry, Matting, Mechanical, Security, and Logistics in properly and effectively implementing Backwoods HSE Management System. This person must consistently convey mature professional judgement, provide mentorship and guidance to employees and subcontractors, build strong relationships with the divisional teams and clients and be able to work in a setting with minimal supervision.
The ideal candidate has post-secondary education in safety combined with a broad background of leadership and field experience. Travel up to 50% of the time will be required to various sites in the Alberta region.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drive and promote the Backwoods mission and culture.
  • Support Corporate HSE in the development, revisions, and implementation of Corporate and Divisional HSE Programs, Procedures and Practices.
  • Proactively coach workers in the various facets of safety performance and leads by example.
  • Visit assigned projects weekly, if not assigned full-time to a project.
  • Participate in weekly Corporate HSE Meetings.
  • Develop and implement project/site specific training requirements for all Divisions.
  • Provide support and assistance to employees and subcontractors on completing training, document reviews, and form completion in Backwoods Online HSE Management System.
  • Support employees through Backwoods Modified Work Program.
  • Track, monitor and report divisional compliance to established HSE performance metrics.
  • Facilitate emergency response drills with project and/or site leadership, as per Backwoods Emergency Response requirements.
  • Participate in Toolbox Talks and/or safety meetings at Backwoods projects.
  • Communicate relevant HSE information to supervisors and divisional leadership.
  • Review and provide coaching on FLHAs to employees and supervisors.
  • Document, track, and monitor (the implementation and effectiveness of) corrective actions in Backwoods Online HSE Management System.
  • Respond to HSE issues related to all divisions at Backwoods.
  • Flash report and investigate incidents associated with each division.
  • Communicate HSE issues and/or concerns to divisional Leadership and the HSE Manager.
  • Track, monitor, and investigate trends and high-risk Hazard IDs within the Divisions.
  • Schedule and facilitate HSE project planning activities with Project Leadership and verify project planning action items are completed within the specified timelines.
  • Support in the development, periodic reviews and revisions to Job Hazard Assessments associated with the positions and projects within the Divisions.
  • Audit project compliance to Backwoods and Project HSE requirements - communicate non-compliance to Project and Divisional Leadership.
  • Verify the applicability and effectiveness of Hazard Assessments through site audits, incident reviews, industry best practices, and consultation with field employees.
  • Liaise with clients on HSE matters related to each division.
  • Conduct worksite and focused inspections as per established KPI targets for each division.
  • Verify subcontractors working for each division are managed following Backwoods Subcontractor Management Program.
  • Verify commercial vehicle operator’s compliance to Backwoods Commercial Vehicle Safety and Maintenance Program.
  • Provide site specific orientation to new employees working at Backwoods yards and worksites.
  • Provide additional project admin support (as required), and
  • Additional and alternative duties that may be changed from time-to-time by the Employer.
