ABOUT THE JOB

The Field Scientific Advisor (FSA) is a promotional tier in the Sanofi Canada Medical Team. The Canadian Medical FSA will focus their efforts on rheumatology and report to the Country Medical Lead Immunology, while maintaining a reduced field MSL role & territory with limited responsibilities. The FSA role is focused on supporting the unmet medical needs of the Canadian population of Healthcare Providers (HCPs) and Healthcare Advocates (HCAs), leading to optimal outcomes for patients within the area of disease focus. This role is responsible for operationalization of the Canadian medical disease plan, including strategy development, publications, advisory boards, internal and external medical education, and KOL engagement plan, and especially internally as the disease state expert to champion the development and execution of an efficient and integrated Canadian medical/scientific strategy, including scientific evidence generation and scientific information exchange with all key stakeholders.

  • The FSA will work with the Country Medical Lead Immunology by functioning as an internal expert in Rheumatology.
  • The FSA will assist Health Care Professionals and Payers optimize patient care and treatment outcomes through evidence-based decisions, innovation through the use of new evidence/data platforms and strategies seeking greater reach.
  • The FSA will lead in the disease area, alongside the Country Medical Lead Immunology, and will gain long term strategic experience in establishing and growing the medical function within a focused Specialty Care environment. We believe this work is best accomplished through the generation, interpretation, and communication of accurate clinical and scientific information.
  • The FSA plays a key role in the operationalization of the mission by providing the strategic leadership, senior level expertise, and in the translation of Medical plans to field actions for MSL execution
  • The FSA will establish and maintain collaborative medical and scientific relationships with key external physicians and multiple internal constituencies from several Sanofi functional groups including, but not limited to, Medical, Clinical Research, Regulatory, Science, Marketing, Sales, Commercial Operations, Patient Advocacy and Patient & Product Services, while maintaining full compliance with all relevant company, industry, legal, and regulatory requirements.

EDUCATION

  • Degree from an accredited university (MSc, PhD, Pharm D, MD) required.
  • Area of specialization related to therapeutic area preferred.
  • Post-bachelor’s degree from accredited university (e.g. MBA or equivalent): valuable, not required.

EXPERIENCE

  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience and a proven track record within the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry. Research or laboratory experience in academic environment is a definite asset.

SPECIFIC SKILLS AND/OR COMPETENCIES

  • Demonstrated ability to independently work under pressure in a compliant and highly regulated environment while managing multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to influence without authority in a highly matrixed environment.
  • Strategic approach to problem-solving considering all the potential implications of key decisions and messaging.
  • Experience with clinical health care delivery in Canada and biotechnology drug or device development process.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Must demonstrate exceptional levels of technical and strategic expertise, integrity, and professionalism with a strong awareness of and adherence to medical policy and applicable scientific, legal, and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities:

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop Canadian Medical Plans including broad objectives and strategies for specified disease area(s) for rheumatology in association with the Country Medical Lead Immunology, maintaining alignment with the Canadian commercial goals.
  • Provide medical input to brand team regarding strategy, tactics, and development of claims
  • Serve as an additional internal expert for rheumatology and support the field-based Canadian medical team in this capacity.
  • Develop strategies for and implements execution and reporting of medical advisory boards with the Country Medical Lead Immunology.
  • Support strategy and consideration of rheumatology investigator-sponsored study programs.
  • Co-develop the Canadian scientific communication and publication strategies with the Country Medical Lead Immunology.
  • Partner with Clinical Development to support and develop necessary clinical trials in work related to the disease area or expertise gained.
  • Serve as an internal expert for product and disease-state training of internal colleagues within the disease area.
  • Lead disease specific materials development efforts as part of the relevant disease expert team(s); responsible for translating medical strategy to operational field tactics.
  • Supports MSL team members in their work with the market access group, particularly in discussions with payers.
  • May provide ad hoc review of medical education grant review to ensure alignment with disease-specific strategic goals.
  • Ensure ethical and credible review of Medical and Promotional activities through assistance as needed in PromoMats.
  • Maintains medical and scientific knowledge through continuing medical and scientific education including attending symposia and keeping abreast of the current literature.
  • Provide medical support & expertise to internal functions (e.g., field sales, marketing) for marketed products and to clinical operations for drugs in development. The FSA will have a national scope.
  • Ensure full compliance with all corporate and industry policies and legal and regulatory requirements, for all medical affairs activities.
  • Work closely with the MSL team and Canadian metrics to identify gaps and develop plans for closing those gaps.
    In addition to this national rheumatology specific role led by the Country Medical Lead Immunology, the FSA will maintain a limited amount of field based MSL work within a specific geographic region or among a specific group of HCPs/KOLs, as determined by the Country Medical Lead Immunology.
