Field Operations Engineer

Sydney (Eveleigh) · Early career · Regular field travel, occasional international

TL;DR

  • Be the person who turns a software release into autonomous robots flying real missions - integrate the hardware, provision the platforms, then take them into the field
  • Own new hardware bring-up end-to-end: new airframes, radios, datalinks, and companion computers - flashing, configuring, tuning, and debugging until they work
  • Run field testing campaigns end-to-end: planning, provisioning, flying, data capture, and the post-test debrief
  • Hardware-first, but you live at the seam where software meets the airframe — ArduPilot parameters, Linux, flashing edge compute, and enough scripting to make your own life easier
  • Clear path into a forward-deployed engineering role, supporting integrations and customers across Australia and the US
  • Roughly one week a month in the field, with international travel for demos and deployments
  • Australian citizenship required. A Remote Pilot Licence is a bonus - if you don't have one, we'll help you get it

FIELD SERVICE TECHNICIANS

Electrical & Mechanical | Underground Mining | NSW & QLD

Big gear. Bigger challenges. No two days the same.

Alfabs Mining is growing — and we're looking for experienced Electrical and Mechanical Field Service Technicians who know their way around underground mining equipment and aren't interested in spending every day doing the same thing.

Based DIDO from Emerald, Mackay or Rockhampton, QLD or FIFO from Kurri Kurri, NSW you'll hit the road and head underground, supporting customers across Queensland with diagnostics, breakdowns, repairs, rebuilds and commissioning of specialised underground mining, material handling and face machinery.

If you can fault-find under pressure, solve problems others can't and take pride in getting serious machinery back into production, we want to hear from you.

Alfabs Group is an ASX-listed Australian engineering and manufacturing company, and our Mining business is entering a major growth phase with a strong pipeline of work across NSW and Queensland.

This is your chance to get in while we're growing.

THE ROLE

This isn't a workshop-only role. You'll be out where the equipment earns its keep — providing hands-on technical support across underground coal mining operations. You'll work across specialised equipment, tackle complex faults and work alongside experienced electrical and mechanical trades to keep our customers moving.

Expect to get involved in:

  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical and mechanical faults on underground mining equipment
  • Planned maintenance, preventative maintenance and breakdown repairs
  • Emergency field service call-outs when the pressure is on
  • Supporting coal cutting and face machinery underground
  • Equipment rebuilds, refurbishment, assembly and commissioning
  • Installing, testing and commissioning electrical components and control systems
  • Conducting pre-start checks, inspections and statutory testing
  • Reading and working from schematics, engineering drawings and scopes of work
  • Building strong relationships with customer and site teams
  • Getting the job done safely, properly and professionally

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

We're looking for tradespeople who know their stuff, back themselves and work well when the job gets challenging.

You'll need:

  • Relevant Electrical or Mechanical Trade Qualification
  • Underground coal mining field service experience
  • Extensive experience in Coal Cutting / Face Machinery
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic capability
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, engineering drawings and scopes
  • A serious commitment to safety
  • Strong work ethic and a willingness to get stuck in
  • Good communication skills and the ability to deal confidently with customers
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a crew
  • Willingness to travel across NSW and Queensland
  • Flexibility to work overtime when the job requires it
  • Current Drivers Licence

Even better if you already have:

  • Current Coal Board Medical
  • Forklift licence
  • Broad experience across underground coal mining and face machinery

WHY ALFABS?

Because if you're good at what you do, you should be somewhere that gives you room to use it.

At Alfabs, you'll get:

  • Permanent, full-time employment
  • Excellent hourly rates and allowances based on experience
  • Genuine flexibility
  • Diverse field service work across NSW and Queensland
  • Access to specialised underground mining and face machinery
  • A strong pipeline of projects and growing customer demand
  • Career development and progression as the Mining business expands
  • The backing of an ASX-listed Australian company
  • A down-to-earth, experienced team that works together
  • Employee rewards and discounts
  • Employee Assistance Program
