Herzog Services of Canada, Ltd. is currently seeking a Field Supervisor Ultra-Sonic Rail Testing (NOC 22230) in Canada to join our team. HSCL operates a fleet of highly specialized test vehicles that perform ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT, NDE, NDI) of rail for the nation’s railroads. 2-3 man crews are deployed to test specific routes that cover broad geographic areas.
The Field Supervisor will operate the specialized rail hybrid (hy-rail) vehicle both on public highways in interstate commerce and on rail engaging in safety sensitive duties for the transportation industry. Primary duties of a Field Supervisor will be to manage many crews performing ultrasonic inspection for the rail industry and any other special projects assigned by the company.
Duties and Responsibilities:

- Manage the daily operator and performance of detector cars
- Manage the staffing and scheduling of detector cars
- Manage training process of detector car staff
- Perform periodic and thorough inspections of all detector cars.
- Audit equipment condition and report any substandard conditions
- Recommend improvements to equipment or suggest changes that will impact performance or efficiency.
- Inspect the lubrication of all grease points on the chassis and proprietary testing equipment
- Inspect the overall cleanliness of the interior, exterior and mechanical workings of the test vehicle
- Inspect the organization of parts, supplies and consumable inventories
- Obtain fuel and any other necessary fluids and materials for proper daily operation of the vehicle
- Train employees to perform necessary the necessary functions of ultrasonic inspection of rail
- Collecting and notating UT data in accordance to testing procedures and requirements
- Interpreting data and reporting the presence of internal defects
- Defect location in accordance to hand test methods and procedures
- Review daily reporting vehicle movement and defect information for submission back to clients
- Operation of the vehicle at speeds and direction in accordance to testing requirements
- Safe operation of the vehicle on rail in accordance to specific and general safety regulations
- Maintaining equipment and other necessary functions of the test system
- Crew member training and management oversight
- Conduct liquid penetrant inspection
- Conduct tests to ensure quality or detect defects
- Interpret and document liquid penetrant inspection
- Prepare surface for liquid penetrant inspection
- Establish NDI techniques and calibration standards
- Calibrate, test and interpret ultrasonic equipment
- Establish techniques for proper examination of objects under inspection, ensuring strict adherence to safety regulations
- Instruct and supervise trainees
- Maintain test result reports
- Inspect processes
- Operate testing equipment to maintain quality of products
- Perform pre-operational inspection
- Verify equipment’s efficiency
- Conduct quality audits
- Determine staffing requirements
- Maintain inspection records and complete inspection reports

Qualifications:
- Must Hold a Nondestructive Testing Certificate
- Must hold a valid driver’s license
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school diploma
- Rules Qualified to operate a motorized vehicle while on rail
- 10 years’ experience with Ultra-Sonic Rail Testing equipment/systems
- Previous railroad experience is required.
- Previous commercial vehicle driving experience preferred.
- Previous light mechanical repair experience preferred.
- Qualified to Herzog Services, Inc. Level II Status per Herzog Services, Inc. Written Practice, February 7, 2020 (must pass exam within 30 days of employment)
Travel Requirements:
- Extensive travel to all Canadian provinces and all US states and territories are to be expected. We strive to place employees within reasonable distances from their home area. Tours can have a duration of 5 consecutive calendar weeks, with 2 days at your declared residence between each tour. A daily per diem will be allotted to offset room and board expenses.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Basic security clearance and criminal record check.
- Pass and maintain e-RAILSAFE pre-employment background check and safety certification.
- Subject to motor vehicle report review.
- Maintain valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
- Pass pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
- Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.
Physical Requirements:

- Regularly use hands to perform activities involving grasping, turning, holding with forces up to 50 pounds.
- Regularly ascend and descend steps with a height of 18 inches.
- While seated, frequently look over left and right shoulders with 180 degrees of movement.
- Frequently bend, crouch, kneel, stand, and sit for extended time.
- Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
- Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals as required by the position.
- Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery.
