About the role The Field Technician is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and first-line support of all technical systems at remote test facilities. This includes RF, radar, acoustic, and EO/IR equipment, and the supporting ICT, power, and security infrastructure required to enable development, testing, demonstrations, and day-to-day site operations. Working closely with the Site Manager, the Field Technician ensures that all systems are functional, available, and ready for use by site personnel. The role combines hands-on technical work at the test site with office-based planning, configuration, and coordination activities. Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations Technical Infrastructure & User Support Maintain and support site technical infrastructure, including: Network firewalls, switches, and access points Servers and storage systems Remote access and connectivity solutions End-user devices such as laptops, test equipment interfaces, and peripherals Security systems Power delivery Perform first-line troubleshooting and fault isolation across all technical systems. Coordinate repairs, replacements, and specialist support as required. Conduct proactive monitoring and reporting of technical systems. CUAS Systems Support Support the deployment, configuration, and operation of CUAS systems. Perform first-line troubleshooting and fault isolation of CUAS equipment. Escalate complex faults or specialist issues to the Site Manager and relevant engineering teams. On-Site Technical Support Provide hands-on technical support during development, testing, and demonstration activities. Ensure users have the systems, access, and connectivity required to perform their duties. Support visiting staff and partners with site systems and technical inductions. Assist with basic system health checks and readiness reviews prior to site use. Incident Management & Escalation Track issues via the Jira request portal and contribute to resolution reporting. Escalate issues impacting safety, availability, or scheduled activities to the Site Manager. Support the Site Manager with technical input for planning, risk assessment, and scheduling. Documentation & Continuous Improvement Maintain technical documentation, diagrams, and configuration records. Contribute to system improvements, standardisation, and reliability initiatives. Assist with post-incident reviews and root cause analysis Qualifications, Experience and Skills Essential Experience in a field technician, systems technician, or similar technical support role. Comfortable working both independently and as part of a small, multidisciplinary team. Experience providing first-line technical support and fault isolation in stressful environments. Strong problem-solving skills, with a structured approach to fault diagnosis and escalation. Experience with designing and configuring networks including VLANs and static routes. Experience in one or more of the following technologies: FortiGate firewalls MikroTik switches and routers Remote access and site-to-site VPNs Ubuntu servers Prometheus and Grafana Docker Scripting languages i.e. Python Jira service management tools Desirable Basic understanding of with RF systems, antennas, and principles. Experience with RF, acoustic, EO/IR, or similar sensing technologies. Experience in or working with Defence. Personal Attributes Practical, methodical, and technically curious. Calm under pressure and able to troubleshoot systematically. Strong communication skills, particularly when working with non-technical users. Working Conditions On-site presence required during active site use, sometimes overnight. Exposure to outdoor and agricultural environments, including livestock and wild animals. Responsibility for operation in a remote location with limited immediate emergency services. Occasional work outside standard hours to support test site activities.
