Job Title: Finance and Accounting ManagerJob Description The Finance and Accounting Manager plays a key leadership role in advancing the financial health and integrity of the organization. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this position leads a skilled accounting team, ensuring financial operations run efficiently. This includes managing budgeting, audits, grants, and payroll. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, hands-on leader who thrives in a mission-driven nonprofit environment, adept at turning complex financial data into meaningful insights. Responsibilities Lead and mentor the accounting team, including accounts payable and payroll, fostering accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement. Oversee payroll administration to ensure compliance with wage and hour laws, as well as IRS reporting requirements. Oversee month-end close and deliver timely, accurate financial reports. Manage federal and state grant billing, reporting, and compliance. Collaborate with the CFO and program directors to review financial performance, budget variances, and grant spending. Prepare the organization’s annual budget and support budget planning across departments. Maintain strong internal controls and audit trails. Lead coordination of the annual financial audit and 990 tax filing. Prepare and monitor the annual indirect cost rate, ensuring compliance with grant requirements. Essential Skills Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or related field. 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting and finance, with at least 5 years in a leadership role. Demonstrated leadership in budgeting, audits, grants, and payroll management. Strong working knowledge of financial systems, banking processes, and Microsoft 365, particularly Excel. Excellent communication, organization, and project management skills. Additional Skills & Qualifications MBA, CPA, or CMA preferred. Experience in nonprofit finance and grant compliance is strongly preferred. Work Environment This position will have 8 direct reports and offers the possibility of a hybrid work arrangement within the Des Moines area for the right candidate. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Des Moines, IA.
