FINANCE CONTROLLER

The Finance Controller is responsible for accurate financial reporting, managing budgeting processes, and providing strategic financial insights to support organizational goals. Additionally, the Finance Controller leads a dedicated team, ensures compliance with funding requirements, and optimizes financial performance within the not-for-profit sector.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting or business
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
  • A minimum of five (5+) years of progressive financial management experience, including leadership roles.
  • Proven track record in managing financial operations in a not-for-profit or similarly complex organizational environment.
  • Experience with budget development, financial forecasting, and strategic planning.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial reporting standards (e.g., IFRS, ASPE, or relevant standards for not-for-profits).
  • Experience with full-cycle accounting, financial analysis, and audit preparation.Proficiency in using and implementing accounting systems such as Sage300, QuickBooks, or other ERP systems.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee accounting operations including accounts payable, purchasing, billing, online registration and accounts receivable.
  • Provide training, leadership, and guidance to members of the finance team.
  • Ensures financial recording accuracy and compliance with the Canadian Tax Act, as well as other federal and provincial regulations.
  • Remains current and knowledgeable on issues and regulations pertaining to the charitable and non-profit sector that may have a direct impact upon financial resources and planning of the organization. Monitor legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to financial reporting and operations, and ensure compliance.
  • Assists with building out operational budgets and forecasting processes.
  • Prepares documentation for audit purposes and produces audit working papers.
  • Supports month-end and year-end close process.
  • Oversee account coding and data entry.
  • Prepare monthly reporting package for review including the Statement of Revenues and Expenditures, Balance sheet, Cashflow and Notes to the Financial Statements.
  • In cooperation with the Directors of Operation, and regional staff, prepare external reporting for specific projects, contracts, grants, and funding proposals.
  • Regularly review, update, and maintain the organization’s documentation of internal controls, financial policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, best practices, and organizational needs.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies, monitor key account balances, and provide insights to support financial decision-making.
    Performs additional duties as assigned by the CFO.
