WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a candidate who holds an undergraduate degree, accountancy qualification, or have equivalent experience. You will have experience of higher education policy and research administration and finance, experience in developing and managing financial resources, including preparing, managing, and monitoring budgets and the preparation and analysis of management reports to inform financial decisions.
We are looking for a candidate with proven ability to work within a complex financial environment, strong IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Access and Excel, and electronic finance systems (preferably Oracle including Discoverer) and excellent numerical skills, accuracy and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

Department of Computing is looking to appoint a knowledgeable Finance Officer who will pro-actively oversee all departmental finance operations and ensure the implementation of the Department’s finance strategy on a day-to-day basis. They will be a focal point for the management of the general ledger portfolio and other similar funded activities in the Department. The post holder will support academic staff acting as a key and pivotal contact and source of information for financial queries within the Department including acting as a conduit between the Department and College Finance Team. The FO will report to the Director of Operations and provide advice on strategic aspects of departmental administration.
The FO will support the Director of Operations in the annual budgeting round, and continuous monitoring. They will be responsible for the implementation of the College’s financial policies on all transactions and develop and continuously improve department processes related to finance. The post holder will have a high level of practical accounting experience and be able to work on his/her own initiative.

WHAT YOU WOULD BE DOING

You will be responsible for:

  • Oversee all transactions to ensure they are carried out correctly, efficiently and in a timely manner, and comply with departmental and College procedures
  • Assist and keep an overview of:
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records for all aspects of departmental financial administration to meet audit requirements
  • Processing bursaries, tuition fees, expense claims and external sponsorship
  • processing and approval of purchase orders and VCCs;
  • processing of online journals;
  • ensuring invoicing across all accounts is up to date and in line with contracts
  • set up and closing of accounts as appropriate and transfer balances.
  • Complete all regular financial reporting, such as payroll suspense etc.
  • Management of departmental financial data including report generation, forecasting and planning. This will include the preparation of regular income and expenditure reports and projections for consideration by the DoO and the Departmental Management Committee.

As well as duties for Research Group Administration including:

  • Preparation of audit reports and account reconciliations ensuring compliance in post- research grant awards and with sponsors’ terms and conditions for their group.
  • Monitoring of grant claims for the group to ensure compliance with regulations and dealing with queries on expenditure on claims with corroborating evidence.
  • To coordinate and distribute financial reports of the group’s research portfolio, budgets and accounts, and take action where necessary.
