A. Position Summary:
Reporting to the Senior Pastor at Markham Peoples Community Church (MPCC), the Finance Officer is responsible for managing the books for the following:
(i) Markham Peoples Community Church (MPCC);
(ii) The Peoples Theatre for the Performing Arts (Peoples Theatre) which is part of MPCC; and
(iii) The Markham Wesley Centre (MWC) which is sponsored by MPCC.
The Finance Officer is responsible for managing the overall financial operations of the above, including administration of accounting functions, budgets, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, tax remittance and compliance, risk management, and related statements and reports in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and regulations.
B. Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Planning and Budgeting: Develop and maintain financial systems. Prepare annual organization budgets for Board approval. Monitor budget performance. Help prepare budgets for funding proposals.
- Financial Reporting and Analysis: Prepare monthly and quarterly reports and documents covering accounting transactions for Board review. Ensure accurate records are kept. Prepare annual financial reports. Coordinate and support for annual audits. Forecast future cash flows and provide periodic financial analysis. Assist in writing expenses reports for funded programs.
- Cash Management: Oversee the Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable functions. Manage bill payments, staff expenses, and execute invoicing procedures to collect money owed by vendors, customers and clients. Ensure timely payment of invoices.
- Accounting and Record Keeping: Complete account reconciliation including bank, credit cards, donation and fundraising. Perform bookkeeping functions. Track and maintain inventory of supplies.
- Payroll and Employee Support: Manage the employee payroll process, and government payroll remittances including WSIB and Benefits. Administer employee benefits, attendance and vacation tracking. Support the Theatre Manager in preparing rental contracts and invoicing.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulations, and internal
policies. Ensure compliance with grant conditions.
- Risk Management: Identify and mitigate financial risks.
- Communication and Collaboration: Provide financial advice and guidance to the Boards and collaborate with other teams.
- Others: Support the MWC front desk functions on needs base.

D. Required Skills and Experience:
- Detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy
- Critical eye and strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to organize and prioritize workload, managing multiple tasks with tight timelines in a busy work environment
- Demonstrated experience processing financial transactions such as payables and receivables, and preparing bank and GL account reconciliations
- Excellent financial software/database proficiency
- Proficient in financial accounting and reporting systems, Microsoft Office and Excel
- Knowledge of related regulations and legislations
- Experience working in a similar role with a non-profit organization and familiarity with Canada Revenue Agency’s guidelines for Registered Charities a definite asset
- Fluency in Chinese and Cantonese is preferred.
E. Qualifications and Education:
- Accounting or Financial degree or diploma or certification in accounting
- Minimum three years’ related experience
- Proven ability to maintain confidentiality.
F. Working Conditions:
- 30 hours a week.
