The Accounting Services Division within the City of Toronto (the City) is responsible for delivering on the City’s financial reporting obligations and ensuring that the City’s financial transactions are accounted for in accordance with the Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS).

Responsibilities
  • Post-secondary education in a discipline relevant to the job function (e.g., Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Accounting).
  • Enrollment in or completion of the CPA Professional Education Program, or have a Canadian Chartered Professional Accountants designation with CPA Ontario or another CPA provincial body (e.g., CPA, CA, CMA, or CGA).
  • Considerable accounting, financial reporting, TCA reporting, and/or auditing experience in a public or private sector entity.
  • Considerable experience with municipal accounting and/or Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, including Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS), Canadian Auditing Standards, Provincial statutes and regulations, City by-laws, and Council directions.
  • Considerable experience performing financial and accounting analysis to support decision-making processes, as well as identifying and investigating unusual financial trends and transactions to evaluate the accuracy of accounting treatment decisions.
  • Considerable experience performing research, including report writing, data collection, and critical analysis of information from various sources.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively to all organizational levels.
  • Knowledge of financial and internal controls.
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities with competing timelines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and computer-based accounting systems (e.g., SAP and Oracle).
  • Demonstrates strong analytical, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills to develop, recommend, and implement effective solutions.
  • Has sound judgment and the ability to address confidential, sensitive matters.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently with minimum supervision and to plan, prioritize, and execute tasks.
  • Ability to work overtime when required.
  • Familiarity with Ontario Statutes, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, employment standards, labour and human rights, and other applicable government legislation.
