Job Summary
The Financial Analyst is responsible for carrying out financial analysis and validation of purchases against the approved budget, analysis in the preparation of consolidated financial statements, budgets and forecasts, ensuring adherence to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Preparing and verifying journal entry adjustments and accruals, preparing required reports for financial validations, month-end, quarter-end reviews, year-end audit and budget presentations. The financial analyst also prepares ad hoc accounting analysis.

Key Accountabilities:
- Carry out and document financial validation of purchases against the approved budget and forecast, validation of cost information, accounting coding and price escalations.
- Carry out financial analysis, verification, processing and posting of journal entries to G/L including adjustments, accruals, reversals and recurring entries.
- Ensure reasonableness of account balances. Analyze, review, verify, monitor, and track transactions for operating and capital expenditures and staffing data, including extracting departmental data from forecasting/budgeting system.
- Prepare detailed variance analysis schedules to clients.
- Prepare monthly financial reporting for review by Senior Leadership Team.
- Provide advice and support to departments on procurement,
budgeting and forecasting, and financial inquiries as it relates to business decision making.
- Provide guidance and support to project managers in procurement, developing capital project budgets for including in financial forecasts/budgets and approval documents.
- Work with project managers to transfer completed projects to fixed assets on a timely basis.
- Develop solid understanding of NAV CANADA business plan, delegation of financial authority, budgeting, forecasting, and accounting policies and procedures.
- Undertake or participate in special projects, as assigned (e.g. Benchmarking, Business Process Analysis)
Job Requirements
Education:
- Graduation with a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or a diploma from a community college and acceptable specialization in commerce or business administration.
Experience:
- A minimum of five (5) years of relevant knowledge and experience.
- Experience in monitoring financial transactions, reconciling accounts, preparing and analyzing financial information.
- Experience developing complex financial reports/spreadsheets.
- Experience providing financial advisory services.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of organizational structures, cost hierarchies, and mandates.
- Knowledge of theories, principles, standards, best practices, concepts, methods and techniques required to develop and monitor financial reporting and budgeting and forecasting procedures and processes.
- Knowledge of GAAP/IFRS, particularly those for capital expenditure.
- Knowledge of financial analysis, budgeting and forecasting, and financial administration policies, processes and/or procedures.
- Knowledge of research, data collection, validation, verification and analysis methods and techniques for financial reporting and control systems.
- Knowledge of presentation, consultation and writing methods and techniques, as well as various software applications, automated tools and systems to carry out the work.
- Knowledge of Excel (advanced level - functions, pivot tables), PowerPoint, and Word.

- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to provide consultation and hands-on assistance to a client community.
- Ability to set priorities and perform multiple tasks in a changing environment and coordinate processes for financial transactions.
- Ability to work independently with minimum direction and supervision in a fast-paced demanding environment.
- Ability to handle multiple client requests and conflicting deadlines with confidence and appropriate level of management involvement.
- Strong organizational skills and a detailed and methodical approach to work plan and execution.
- Ability to review materials for accuracy and completeness and take appropriate action.
- Ability to develop financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting systems, procedures and processes.

Working conditions:
- This position is based at the Ottawa Head Office but may be eligible for a flexible work arrangement.
