Reporting to the CEO and working closely with Urban Solar’s cross-functional team, the Financial Controller will play a key role in realizing Urban Solar’s mission.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Urban Solar is seeking a Financial Controller to lead its finance and account function, support cross-border operations, and drive digital transformation. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Controller will be a key leader responsible for financial planning, system modernization, and operational decision support.
This is a high-impact role for a finance professional who brings strong accounting fundamentals, a systems mindset, and a collaborative approach.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3+ years of progressive experience in accounting, financial management or controllership
  • Experience with accounting functions in manufacturing or growth-stage company is a plus
  • Strong understanding of Canadian GAAP (ASPE) and intercompany accounting
  • Experience with ERP implementations or financial systems upgrades is a plus
  • Proficient in Excel and financial management tools; QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar
  • Knowledge of U.S. sales tax compliance is a strong asset
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • CPA designation is preferred
Responsibilities

Financial Strategy & Leadership

  • Lead financial reporting, planning, budgeting, and forecasting for leadership and ownership groups
  • Advise the CEO and senior leadership on performance metrics, risks, and opportunities
  • Support cross-functional decision-making with financial analysis and reporting

Digital Transformation

  • Lead the implementation of a new accounting and/or ERP system
  • Build automated processes for reporting, reconciliations, and internal controls
  • Improve financial data visibility through dashboards and custom reporting tools

Operations & Cashflow

  • Oversee full-cycle accounting operations: AP/AR, payroll, inventory & production costing, bank reconciliations, and month-end close
  • Maintain short- and long-term cash flow forecasts and treasury oversight
  • Ensure correct intercompany accounting between Canadian and U.S. entities

Compliance & Reporting

  • Manage year-end review engagement and tax filings, ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Manage sales tax filings and ensure accuracy in U.S. and Canadian tax obligations (U.S. sales tax experience is a plus)

People Management

  • Manage one direct report (bookkeeper/admin) approximately 6-9 months after starting the role
