Join Our Team at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center – Williamsport (Divine Providence Campus) We are currently seeking a Financial Counselor to support our mission of providing exceptional patient care. Position Overview: As a Financial Counselor, you will play a vital role in ensuring patients understand their insurance benefits and financial responsibilities. Your primary duties will include: Verifying insurance coverage prior to scheduled services. Securing necessary authorizations from insurers for applicable treatments and procedures. Providing guidance and support to patients regarding billing and payment options. Schedule & Benefits: Full-time, 40 hours/week Day shift only No weekends or holidays required Key Responsibilities: Obtain initial and follow-up prior authorizations and referrals as required by insurance providers. Verify insurance benefits prior to office visits and scheduled treatments. Initiate financial assistance applications for patients lacking adequate insurance coverage. Collaborate with the billing department to resolve outstanding insurance claims, including those presented by walk-in patients. Support general office operations as needed. Work effectively within a team-oriented environment. Assess self-pay patients and those prescribed non-reimbursable medications to determine eligibility for financial assistance programs, including drug reimbursement, off-label drug policies, medical assistance, and other applicable resources. Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills through clear and compassionate communication. Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations to protect patient privacy. Complete the financial counseling process prior to treatment, including evaluation of patient financial obligations. Meet with patients and their families to discuss billing concerns and available financial options. Utilize the Summary of Patient Reimbursement and Liability Form and obtain necessary approvals prior to services being rendered. Completion of a high school diploma or GED. Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, preferably in a medical office setting. Preferred knowledge of: Medical terminology Third-party payer rules and regulations Credit and collections laws Proficiency in word processing and computer systems; EPIC experience preferred.
