Currently, the City of Belleville has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, strategic, and dynamic individuals to join our Fire and Emergency Services as a Fire Prevention Officer.

Hours: Shall be either 08:30 AM to 16:30 PM Monday to Friday inclusive with one (1) hour for lunch OR four (4) day work week, Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 18:00, with each week alternating from Friday off to Mondays off, with one (1) hour and fifteen (15) minutes for lunch.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Graduate of Ontario Fire College NFPA 1031 Inspector I, NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator, and NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator or equivalents.
• In-depth knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code, and other applicable standards, legislation, and regulations.
• Three (3) years’ experience in the Fire Protection Industry or a related discipline, including experience with the Ontario Building Code and public education related to fire matters.
• Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position including walking, climbing, digging and lifting.
• Demonstrated ability to enforce legislation with fairness, consistency, and professionalism.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare reports and deliver presentations to diverse audiences.
• Valid G Class Driver’s License, with a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract.
• Reside within a 45-minute commuting distance of Belleville, ON, or willingness to relocate, by the end of the probationary period.
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (“CRC”) and a Vulnerable Sector Screening (“VSC”) prior to commencing work at the City of Belleville.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

• NFPA 1021, Fire Officer I.
• NFPA 1041, Fire Service Instructor.
• Firefighting experience with NFPA 1001 – Firefighter I and II or equivalents.
• Post-Secondary Diploma in Fire Protection, Building Construction, Engineering, or a related field.
• Valid DZ Class Driver’s License.
• Experience in the design, function, installation, maintenance and operation of sprinkler systems, standpipe and hose systems, fire alarm and voice communication systems, commercial cooking equipment ventilation and other fire protection systems.
• Experience conducting plans examination of new construction, delivering public education programs and facilitating prosecutions.
• Building Code Identification Number (BCIN): General Legal and Fire Protection3–5 years’ experience currently working as a Fire Prevention Inspector.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

As a member of the Fire Prevention Team, this position is responsible for fire prevention, public education, and plan review. Our commitment is to provide the highest level of life safety and property protection for those who live, work, and play in our community.
Reporting to the Chief Fire Prevention Officer and acting as an Assistant to the Ontario Fire Marshal, this role is accountable for ensuring compliance with the Ontario Fire Code (OFC) and other applicable legislation, standards, and by-laws.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conduct inspections of residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional properties to ensure compliance with fire safety requirements.
• Inspect fire and life safety systems and equipment, and issue inspection orders as required.
• Review and approve fire safety plans to confirm compliance with legislation.
• Prepare detailed reports, correspondence, and documentation related to inspections and enforcement actions.
• Conduct fire cause and determination investigations.
• Testify and provide evidence in court and other legal proceedings as required.
• Deliver fire prevention and life safety education programs and presentations to schools, businesses, community groups, and other stakeholders.
• Provide technical guidance and support to property owners, contractors, and the public regarding fire prevention measures.
• Respond to emergencies and perform duties as assigned by incident commander.
• Support broader Fire Prevention Team initiatives, including public awareness campaigns and community risk reduction programs.
