POSITION SUMMARY

The Fire Prevention Officer is responsible for managing fire prevention measures, safety education, inspections, and emergency response coordination within the community. This individual will be a volunteer firefighter and will handle all aspects of fire prevention and suppression within the community.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience as a volunteer firefighter.
  • Training in fire prevention, suppression, and safety education.
  • Knowledge of fire prevention inspection methods & techniques.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
  • WHMIS training.
  • Must have a DZ License to operate fire trucks.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with the language, culture, history, and customs of M’Chigeeng First Nation.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct inspections of all community buildings, housing (new & old), and property for fire hazards, efficiency of fire protective equipment, adequacy of fire exits, and compliance with fire prevention regulations and MFN by-laws.
  • Maintain the operation and preparedness of all firefighting equipment, emergency equipment, fire station, and other departmental property, including fire hydrants.
  • Maintain and update fire prevention systems.
  • Coordinate all training for volunteers in firefighting, use of related equipment, and fire prevention procedures.
  • Develop and deliver fire safety education programs for the community.
  • Participate in emergency response as a volunteer firefighter and take command during firefighting operations.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with fire prevention by-laws and enforce fire codes within the community.
  • Prepare reports on fire prevention, inspections, training, and any fire-related incidents.
  • Make recommendations on repairs or replacements needed for firefighting equipment and infrastructure.
  • Maintain an inventory of firefighting and emergency response equipment, ensuring proper stocking, routine maintenance, and repair of necessary supplies.
  • Coordinate with other emergency response teams as necessary to ensure the community’s fire safety and preparedness.
  • Conduct regular reviews and updates of the community’s emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures and disaster response drills.
  • Facilitate and participate in community outreach efforts, such as fire safety workshops, fire prevention education for residents, and collaboration with community groups on fire safety initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records of fire inspections, training sessions, community outreach activities, and other fire-related activities.
  • Coordinate fundraising activities such as boot drives, food bank donations at the local grocery store, and the firefighter portion of the Santa Claus parade.
  • Coordinate and oversee community activities and events related to fire prevention and safety.
