KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of the Fire Services Act, BC Fire Code, BC Building Code, and applicable municipal bylaws.
  • Knowledge of the chemistry and behaviour of fire, building construction, and life safety systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical documents, drawings, and fire code requirements.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal, and written, with the ability to engage and educate the public and stakeholders effectively.
  • Ability to conduct investigations and document findings thoroughly and accurately.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, REDMS, Fire Department Management (FDM) and ability to learn related technical/digital software systems as required.
  • Commitment to professional conduct, continuous learning, and public service.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct fire and life safety inspections across various occupancies in accordance with applicable municipal and provincial codes, standards, and bylaws.
  • Enforce compliance through education, notices, orders, and citations as required.
  • Review and assess Fire Safety Plans for compliance with the BC Fire Code and City of Richmond Bylaws.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports related to inspections and investigations.
  • Conduct fire investigations to determine cause and origin.
  • Prepare and deliver fire and life safety education programs tailored to the diverse needs of Richmond’s residents and businesses.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource for the public, internal City departments, and partner agencies on fire prevention and life safety matters.
  • Support fire prevention initiatives and participate in proactive risk-reduction strategies as assigned.
