This position is a rare opportunity to join an exciting team. Indian Valley Vocational Center is seeking a dynamic team player interested in making an impact in the lives of students as the Fire Science Instructor. The Fire Science Instructor is responsible for teaching high school students (11 and 12th grade) at Indian Valley Vocational Center. The class must be taught in a safe and orderly manner in a neatly maintained facility. The instructor will be responsible for participating in the development of the curriculum process with an emphasis on integrated curriculum and alignment of course competencies with the essential academic learning requirements. The instructor will also work with post-secondary institutions to develop articulation agreements. The instructor must have the ability to incorporate new and emerging technology into the instruction process as well as become involved with community and industry partnerships in the area.

Required

  • Must meet requirements to obtain Illinois State Board of Education Career and Technical Education Certification.
  • Have at least 8,000 hours experience as a firefighter.
  • Ability to use technology in the educational setting.
  • Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification (or ability to obtain). CPR Trainer preferred.
  • OSFM certification
  • Fire Service Instructor I and II
  • Basic Operations Firefighter I or II
  • Advanced Technician Firefighter
  • Hazardous Materials Operations or Technician
  • Fire Service Vehicle Operations, Machinery Operations

Preferred

  • Associates Degree, preferably in Fire Science
  • Experience in Emergency Medical Services.
  • Experience working and supervising students in a classroom setting.
  • Experience working with high school students in developing their knowledge and skill to be employed in the fire science industry or to continue to post-secondary education.

Responsibilities:

  • Instruct, train, evaluate and monitor students while delivering current curriculum and competency based skills, relevant fire sciences and fire industry information regarding firefighting strategy and tactics, equipment skills, and industry safety to students working to obtain fire science and related industry credits.
  • Ability to build and foster partnerships within the community and promote Career and Technical Education programs.
  • Maintain an Advisory Committee of local employers. Keep agenda and minutes of all meetings.
  • Supervise and support student work-based learning opportunities through job shadows and internships.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of instructional guides, lesson plans, training aids and reference materials utilizing modern technology.
  • Provide a safe and open learning environment for the students.
  • Coordinate hands-on skills training, industry certification testing, and incorporate fitness training in curriculum.
  • Dedicated to professional growth and development.
  • Possess a team approach attitude toward fellow workers.
  • Establish and maintain a professional and positive working relationship with students, parents, school counselors, staff and the general public.
  • Desire to be a role model for students.
  • Record of dependability, flexibility, and regular attendance.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to be a “team” player by establishing and maintaining cooperative professional relationships.
  • Assist in supporting other instructors at Indian Valley Vocational Center.
  • Ability to be innovative and committed to the challenge of change in education.
  • Assist in ongoing professional development to maintain a current working knowledge relevant to their field.
  • Ability to be committed to success for all students.
  • Believe cultural diversity is a strength and have the attitude that we will meet the needs of any student who enters our school.
  • Ability to be flexible and cooperative in schedule changes and accommodating in other needs for use of facility.
  • Implement 504 and IEP accommodations in the education of students with disabilities.
  • Maintain CTE Certification for the State of Illinois.
  • Supports, implements, and abides by OSFM and partnering agencies’ policies, regulations, procedures and administrative directives.
  • Submits records, reports, assignments, grades, assessments, progress reports, communication log and weekly lesson plans promptly and efficiently.
  • Maintain overall personal health to support physical demands of position.
