Description

The Massachusetts Military Division is looking to add two Firefighter/EMT’s as members of the 104th Fighter Wing (Barnes) Fire Department. The Firefighter/EMT will respond with crews to emergencies on the Barnes Air National Guard Base, Army Aviation Support Facility, Barnes Municipal Airport, and to local communities as needed; This is a full performance level of work in fire suppression, fire prevention, communications, technical rescue, training, and emergency medical care. Work is performed through established policies, procedures, and operational guidelines, and requires initiative and resourcefulness.

Ability to wear foll personal protective equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus, and engage in strenuous physical effort for prolonged periods of time

Ability to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) atmospheres.
Basic computer/data entry skills

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Current and valid certification as a Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations and First Responder issued by a National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualification Certifications or an equivalent certifier such as the Department of Defense (DOD) Certifications or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).
  2. Current and valid certification (Basic, Intermediate or Paramedic) as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and current certification as a C.P.R. Basic Rescuer by either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.

  3. Successful completion of a Physical Ability Test (PAT).
  4. Success completion of an occupational physical examination.
  5. Current and valid Class D Motor Vehicle Operators License or the equivalent from another state is required.

Responsibilities

Perform firefighting activities, including controlling and extinguishing fires, and operating hose lines, make forced entries, and ventilate structures; perform hazardous materials mitigation; perform or assist in rescue operations in conditions involving structural fires, aircraft, vehicle and machinery extrication, above and below grade environments, and confined spaces.
Use and maintain firefighting and medical equipment. Inspect, maintain, and provide routine maintenance on fire equipment, power tools, portable fire extinguishers and apparatus. Inspect, drive and operate Fire Department vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and grounds.
Provide Emergency Medical Service at the Basic level, under the direction of the Wing Medical Director.
Participate in fire prevention and inspection programs, including fire drills, attending classes in firefighting, emergency medical service, hazardous materials and related subjects to maintain and improve upon required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Performs clerical working, including maintaining records, publications and technical manual libraries. Complete emergency medical run reports.
Perform Fire Alarm Communications Center work, including answering phones, transferring calls, receiving emergency communications, dispatching appropriate vehicles/equipment, maintaining daily and emergency logs, utilizing ACES-FD program, and in-house alerting system.
Perform routine maintenance on fire hydrants and conduct flow testing to promote fire safety and fire prevention. Inspect buildings and other structures in fire prevention programs to correct fire hazards and to identify design deficiencies to be programmed for correction.
Prepare materials and conduct training classes, according to certification level, to provide instruction to personnel concerning fire prevention and firefighting.
Maintain the required amount of Continuing Education hours for EMT certification.
Conduct alarm room operations and dispatch, including daily log maintenance and procedures, communication recording and automated alarm system monitoring.
