DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief or their designate, the incumbent will be required to work under emergency and non-emergency conditions for the purpose of fire suppression, health and medical emergencies, vehicular accidents, hazardous material scenes, and other emergencies that might arise. The incumbent will also participate in fire prevention, pre-planning and providing the general maintenance of firefighting equipment, apparatus and fire stations.
The incumbent will respond to a variety of emergency alarms, operate standard and specialized apparatus to combat fire or assist with other emergency situations, and is responsible for such equipment on emergency response, perform rescue operations in the event of fire and other emergencies; initiate fire suppression activities and assist in evacuation and rescue duties; attend ongoing firefighter training programs; carry out fire prevention and safety activities; perform routine maintenance of firefighting equipment and carry out other duties, including emergency, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 19 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Previous firefighting experience
  • Reasonable geographical knowledge of the Town of Conception Bay South
  • Must possess current Class 5 Driver’s License with Class 9 Air Brake endorsement
  • Consideration may be given to those who currently hold a certificate as Firefighter 1 and or 2, along with any other relevant certifications accredited by International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC seal required)
  • The position requires verifiable knowledge in the area of firefighter related duties, ice water rescue, and HAZMAT Awareness & Operations level training. Applicants will be required to complete written testing to demonstrate knowledge of requirements for the position. The incumbent will take an active part in an ongoing training program, and will assist with the ongoing training of other firefighters within the Department
