Description

Under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid will be responsible for assisting in the carcass monitoring program for fall-run Chinook Salmon on the Lower American River. Additionally, the Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid will assist staff with entering data, conducting Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC), summarizing data, and other related office or lab tasks.
The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions
Fieldwork will be conducted within the Lower American River Watershed from Rancho Cordova, California downstream to Sacramento. Field surveys require working in swift water and will involve wading and boating (jet boats, kayaks, canoes, and pontoon boats). Cold water conditions may require the use of wetsuits and waders. Office space will be provided at the Rancho Cordova office for data entry quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) and assisting with anadromous fishery documents. This position will require walking 3-5 miles per day in and along the Lower American River in inclement weather on uneven, slippery surfaces and in-river over large cobble. The incumbent will collect decayed salmon carcasses from the river and process them for biological data and samples. This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff on certain occasions. This position requires possession of a valid Driver’s License. Travel may be required within the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.), less than 5% of the time. Travel may include overnight stay. Must be able to deploy with short notice for extended periods (up to 7 days) that will include overnight stay.
