Alberta Environment and Protected Areas is dedicated to safeguarding Alberta’s natural resources and ecosystems while balancing environmental and economic needs. We focus on wildlife conservation, managing protected areas, creating environmental policies, conducting research, and engaging the public through educational initiatives. Our commitment is to sustainability, ensuring Alberta’s landscapes and resources are preserved and responsibly managed for future generations.
The Government of Alberta raises fish in hatcheries and stocks them into the province’s water bodies to support sport fishing and fisheries management conservation efforts. Among the four facilities operated by the province, the Cold Lake Fish Hatchery plays a key role. It utilizes both flow-through and partial recirculating aquaculture systems (PRAS) and is one of Alberta’s two production and grow-out hatcheries. The facility raises Brown, Brook, Tiger, Cutthroat, Rainbow Trout and Walleye for stocking in lakes across Alberta, contributing to the province’s economy through recreational fishing.
