Job Details Level: Experienced Job Location: Winslow Indian Health Care Center - Winslow, AZ 86047 Position Type: Full-Time Education Level: High School Diploma Travel Percentage: Occasionally Job Shift: Any Under general supervision of the Health and Fitness Manager, the Fitness Technician works directly with the Health and Fitness team under the Hozhoogo Iina Wellness Program to implement exercise programs for the Wellness Center. Provides fitness and wellness classes, within scope of practice, to patients, community and staff within the Winslow Service Unit. This position also requires collaborative work with the Division of Community Health Service staff to ensure program goals and objectives are met while adhering to organization policies, protocols, regulations, and standards. Uphold the principles of WIHCC’s Vision, Mission, and Value Statements. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information at all times. This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Maintains regular attendance and punctuality. Complies with all regulations applicable to collaborate with the Fitness Team to provide a fitness/exercise program for identified population within scope of practice, assessment, evaluation, documentation, referring, and reporting, etc. Provides one-on-one and group lifestyle coaching to help participants from school age children to elderly, set and reach goals related to healthy eating, daily exercise, and positive lifestyle changes. Provides assistance and guidance to participants on determining individual strength and capacity to undertake aerobic and/or anaerobic exercise. Assesses and evaluates individuals’ abilities, needs, and physical conditions, and develops appropriate training programs to meet any special requirements under the review of the Fitness Team. Instructs participants in maintaining exertion levels to maximize benefits from exercise routines. Ensures that the participants follow proper techniques of breathing and exercise form so that physical strain does not occur. Observes participants and informs them of corrective measures necessary for skill improvement. Operates and instructs participants in proper use of fitness equipment, such as weight machines, cardio machines, benches, hand weights, and fitness assessment devices. Offers alternatives/modifications during classes to accommodate different levels of fitness. Plans routines, chooses appropriate music, and chooses different movements for each set of muscles, depending on participants’ capabilities and limitation. Teaches fitness classes to improve strength, flexibility, endurance, and/or balance exercises. Provides fitness instruction when scheduled and when scheduled instructor is unable to teach. Maintains cleanliness and organization of workout equipment and exercise rooms. Explains and enforces safety rules and regulations governing use of exercise equipment and wellness center. Instructs in-person and virtual fitness classes that are directed to group and individual participants. Provides hosting and/or cohosting during virtual fitness classes via Zoom or other virtual communication program. Schedules appointments, class reservations, and notifications with patients through Mindbody software. Assists in development and coordination of fitness and wellness programs and/or services. This entails traveling to WIHCC service area communities. Participates in on-going community exercise programs with promotional incentives including contests, special events, etc. Assists in employee health and fitness intervention programs and/or school health and fitness intervention programs if needed. Assist in maintenance of a registry for community fitness and exercise participants. Conducts marketing campaigns to promote a healthy lifestyle and/or participation in fitness and wellness programs. Conducts surveys to determine interest in, or satisfaction with, health and fitness programs, events, or services. Provides clerical support for the Health and Fitness Department. Documents education and appointment encounters in EHR. Participates in departmental quality and performance improvement activities. Upholds all principles of confidentiality and patient care to the fullest extent. Adheres to all professional and ethical behavior standards of the healthcare industry. Adheres to WIHCCs Personnel Policies and Procedures, departmental policies, rules, and regulations. Interacts in an honest, trustworthy and dependable manner with patients, employees, visitors, and vendors. Possesses cultural awareness and sensitivity. Maintains compliance with all Human Resources requirements. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED. Associate’s Degree in health related field preferred. One to two years of experience in the health or fitness industry required. Specialty certification as personal trainer, group fitness instructor or related specialty is required. ACSM, NASM, NSCA, ACE certifications are a plus. Current CPR, First Aid and AED certifications required. Bilingual skills in English and Navajo language preferred. Must maintain a valid unrestricted and insurable driver’s license. Must successfully pass a background investigation and maintain suitable requirements for a Child Care position. This position is considered as a Child Care position, which requires a satisfactory background check investigation and is subject to the requirements of the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, as amended (henceforth referred as the ICPFVP Act). Knowledge, Skills, Ability Knowledge in the use and safety of exercise equipment. Knowledge of HIPPA and patient confidentiality. Knowledge of current development and advances in management of chronic diseases, prevention health, and work-site wellness programs. Knowledge of nutrition and fitness trends and strategies that target children, youth and adults, including advertising, policies and standards, and promising or best practices. Knowledge and skill necessary to provide community exercise programs. Knowledge of strong work ethics in the workplace. Knowledge of basic application of confidentiality. Knowledge of basic computer skills, e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Zoom. Knowledge to tow, hitch, and unhitch a trailer. Ability to focus on details, handle multiple tasks, and remain highly organized in a fast past environment. Ability to learn choreography and exercise plans for upcoming classes. Ability to help motivate others to exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle through personal example. Ability to work flexible hours (evening and weekends). Ability to be dependable in attendance and job performance. Ability to accept and learn from feedback. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Physical Demands: While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects and equipment, reach with hands and arms, and communicate effectively by talking and hearing. The employee frequently must stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and may occasionally use taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting or outdoor work environment with moderate noise levels. Work environment may involve exposure to physical risks, such as blood borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, or operating potential dangerous equipment, and requires adherence to all safety protocols. Required work schedules may include evening, weekend, overnight shifts, extended hours, or irregular schedules and rotation as operational needs dictate. As required by P.L. 93-638, absolute preference will be given to qualified Navajo applicants. If there is no qualified Navajo applicant, preference will be given to qualified American Indian applicants.
