Description I. General Statement of Duties The Fleet Mechanic position performs preventive maintenance and routine repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment including SUV’s, sedans, light duty trucks, heavy duty trucks and various other equipment. II. Major Duties and Responsibilities A. Perform preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of vehicles and equipment including automobiles, trucks, heavy construction equipment, and landscaping equipment. B. Responsible for general maintenance to include: filters and other components; draining and changing fluids; changing filters; replacing tires; replacing wheels; rotating tires; balancing and installing new tires; road testing vehicle; performing inspections; and inspecting emergency and safety equipment. C. Performs front and rear brake repairs, diagnose and makes necessary repairs to, cooling systems, D. Performs general diagnoses and repairs of the following systems: Electrical systems Emission systems Engines Transmission Drivelines Steering and suspension Heating and air conditioning systems E. Lubricates, repairs and replaces parts and filters; cleans and replaces spark plugs, installs radiator hoses, and replaces belts. F. Conducts vehicle upfitting; installing equipment and components. G. Other duties as required. III. Controls The Fleet Mechanic works under the general supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor. This position is non-exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Requirements IV. Physical Requirements or Special Working Conditions Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and perform repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to perform mechanical non repetitive work, distinguish the work performed at an arm's reach, and read diagrams and repair manuals. Employees are subject to hazards of automotive mechanics including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, dust, mists, fumes, odors, and oil. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated through observation while in progress and inspected upon completion. V. Qualifications and Experience A. Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, parts and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, trucks, and heavy construction and maintenance equipment. B. Considerable knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair. C. Considerable knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, vacuum, and brake systems. D. Working knowledge of safety hazards and precautions related to the work. E. Skill in the use and the operations of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work. F. Ability to diagnose various electrical, mechanical, electronic, and related problems and to detect by inspection any worn or broken parts. G. Ability to understand service manuals and schematic drawings. H. Ability to operate vehicles safely. I. Must be able to provide tools required for the position. J. Ability to follow instructions accurately. K. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other departments. L. Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of work activities. VI. Educations and Certifications A. Graduation from high school or GED. B. Supplemental coursework in mechanical and/or electrical trade skills C. Prefer possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver license.
