JOB SUMMARY   The Fleet Technician III is an advanced level position responsible for performing skilled maintenance and repair on Walker County’s fleet of vehicles and equipment, including both gasoline and diesel-powered units. This role requires advanced technical knowledge, independent problem-solving skills, and the ability to perform complex diagnostics and repairs. The Fleet Technician III supports the safe and efficient operation of county vehicles while providing guidance and mentorship to lower-level technicians when needed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES   * Perform advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on gas and diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, transmissions, and other vehicle components. * Conduct preventive maintenance inspections and services in accordance with county standards and manufacturer guidelines. * Repair and replace tires, brakes, suspension systems, exhaust systems, and other critical components. * Operate shop equipment such as lifts, welders, tire changers, and diagnostic computers safely and effectively. * Assist with maintaining accurate service records, work orders, and parts usage documentation. * Support severe weather response, emergency operations, and other county needs, which may require work outside normal schedules. * Ensure compliance with all county safety standards and environmental regulations. * Mentor and provide technical guidance to Fleet Technicians I and II as assigned. * Perform other duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCES   * High School diploma or GED required. * Minimum of 5 years of mechanical experience preferred. * Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license (Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License preferred or the ability to obtain within 6 months). * Must provide and maintain personal hand tools SKILLS AND ABILITIES   * Advanced mechanical knowledge and troubleshooting skills. * Ability to manage and complete multiple projects efficiently. * Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on teamwork and customer service. * Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and air tools. * Ability to safely operate hydraulic jacks, air jacks, and similar equipment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS   These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the Fleet Technician III job. Other physical demands include but are not limited to. * Walking/climbing stairs * Climbing and balancing on equipment, step stools, and ladders Standing or squatting * Able to lift a minimum of 45 lbs * Lifting and carrying equipment * Bending, twisting, pushing, and pulling while working on equipment WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing required duties of a Fleet Technician III the employee can be exposed to moderate noise levels.  Duties can be performed in the shop, at other locations assigned by the shop supervisor or Fleet Technician IV including outdoor areas.  Environmental factors include extreme weather conditions at times.  There are also times that a technician could be exposed to respiratory hazards including fumes from gases, chemicals, dust, and dirt.  The Walker County Fleet includes automobiles, light trucks, agricultural mowers and tractors, emergency vehicles, medium to heavy duty trucks and equipment.  Exposure to dangerous machinery.  PPE should be worn as needed.
