Winston Transitions, part of the Winston Preparatory School, is a unique program aimed at supporting young adults ages 17-21 with learning disabilities as they navigate the shift from high school to adult life. Transitions offers a dynamic and responsive learning environment where instruction flows from a holistic understanding of each student developed through ongoing assessment and intensive collaboration amongst team members. Students are introduced to the world of work through our internship program and the professional environment created on campus.
Transitions is looking to fill the role of Focus Teacher. Transitions is seeking someone with experience in supporting social emotional, social communication, and academic skill development. In this position, the Focus Teacher will support students by working one-on-one to develop skills related to socialization and communication, social and emotional well being, comprehension, and executive functioning. Additional skill development areas include self-reflection, self-advocacy, self-regulation, organization and time management, social- responsibility, and resilience. This position is also the primary point of contact to families, and communicating effectively and consistently with families is an integral part of the position.

Responsibilities Include

  • Implementation of personal goal setting and individualized curriculum
  • Work one-on-one with a caseload of students
  • Utilize evidence based strategies for assisting students with various challenges in areas such as social communication skills, self regulation, executive functioning challenges
  • Identify appropriate assessment tools and evaluate students with respect to their social, psychological, and developmental needs
  • Individualized instruction around learning strategy and skill development
  • Providing executive functioning and counseling support to all students on caseload
  • Comprehensive report writing three times a year
  • Full participation in Parent, Student, Teacher Conferences three times a year
  • Weekly and daily (when needed) student folder updates

Experience and Philosophy:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Speech-Language Pathology, Education or related field required
  • Passionate, dedicated, and understanding of Winston Prep/Winston Transitions mission of true individualization
  • Willingness to develop a greater understanding of learning disabilities from a neuropsychological perspective
  • Experience teaching executive function strategies
  • Dedication to using data to drive decision-making and instruction
  • Strong work ethic, professional demeanor, and dedication to the school philosophy
  • Self-reflective and motivated to grow as a professional

Salary range is $45,000 - $72,000 annually, commensurate with experience and education.
