JOB SUMMARY

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Office team works in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment that requires attention to detail and critical thinking skills. Members of this team manage sensitive information that requires working with a high level of confidentiality.
The Compliance Specialist Intermediate is an experienced professional-level position that reports to the Chief FOIA Officer within the Office of the Vice President for Communications. In this role, the preferred candidate will perform a variety of professional duties in support of day-to-day operations to fulfill legal responsibilities under the Michigan FOIA. You will assist with effective, timely, and thorough compliance with a high volume of requests for documents concerning University of Michigan business. You will retrieve records and evaluate various courses of action and interpret and analyze information to ensure that responses are complete and accurate. Primary activities and decision-making are predominantly performed independently.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Two or more years of administrative or paralegal experience in a complex or legal organization.
  • Proficiency working with electronic records.
  • Proven ability to provide thorough solutions to business issues.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge and application of project management skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Working knowledge of open records law or other legal process.
  • Ability to quickly learn, understand and apply rationales that conform to legal requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a high-pressure environment with accuracy.
Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES*

  • Interpret and assist with document requests as allowed through the FOIA process.
  • Use project management skills to prioritize, initiate, and complete tasks.
  • Use analytical skills to review records and identify compliant courses of action.
  • Analyze documents to identify and separate exempt material from nonexempt material.
  • Track and manage requests and report on outputs.
  • Work independently with tight deadlines and adapt to changes.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and constituents regarding FOIA requests.
