THE FACULTY
We are looking for a native Speaker to become our FLA on a rolling one year contract.
The assistant would do around 6 hours per week, and assist exclusively with our Y13 pupils, focusing on their preparation for the Speaking examination with the AQA exam board. The FLA would also promote languages around the school, and support in the admin of displays around the languages area. The FLA would get access to an email account in school and photocopying, and lunches on Monday and Tuesday only.
The FLA would work Monday and Tuesday during term time, and teach the pupils during their free time, this could include lunchtime or between 4pm and 5pm). Please note that being an independent school, our holidays are slightly different from the public sector.
The FLA would be required to work from September until the date of the Speaking exam (16th May 2026).

Main Purpose: The overall objective for the Foreign Language Assistant is to teach about the language and society of their host country whilst bringing their native speaker language skills and their valuable knowledge of their own culture to schools.
The assistant’s role is to improve pupils’ communication skills (in particular oral skills) and develop their knowledge of a different society and culture, as well as their understanding and use of grammar. They support the work of the language department in the school they are placed in, under the supervision of the modern language teachers. They may do this in whole class situations in the teacher’s presence, or they may lead activities independently with small groups of pupils. At Wells, the FLA works mostly with our A-Level pupils, ensuring that they receive one hour of contact time every week. The assistant’s specific qualities enable them to encourage pupils to express themselves orally, to introduce a fun dimension to learning and to discuss socio-cultural topics of interest to children and teenagers, in line with the exam board’s specifications. The main purpose of the FLA role is to support pupils’ preparation for the speaking examinations, both at A-Level and at GCSE level.
