Job Description
STAT Northern Ltd have been providing DSA support for disabled students in higher education for over 15 years. We are now expanding and seeking new enthusiastic and committed Specialist Mentor to join our existing team. Successful candidates will be supporting students in a one-to-one capacity, both online (via Zoom, MS Teams or Google Meet) and within your local area (support reach area to be discussed and agreed upon).
Although most of the work will be remote, we also expect support workers to provide face-to-face support for students who need this most.

As this is a freelance role, you are responsible for your own accounts, and taxes. It will be your responsibility to arrange your own appointments with students and tailor make a programme to suit their individual learning needs.

  • Providing tailored emotional and strategic support to disabled students, focusing on helping them overcome non-academic barriers to learning.
  • Creating a supportive and motivating environment that addresses the individual challenges faced by students, particularly those with mental health conditions, or other disabilities.
  • Developing personalised mentoring plans that align with students’ specific educational needs and personal goals.
  • Implementing evidence-based mentoring techniques, possibly drawing on frameworks such as the Recovery Model or Person-Centred Planning.
  • Promptly responding to student referrals within 24 hours to ensure timely support.
  • Monitoring and evaluating student progress through regular sessions and adapting the mentoring approach as necessary.
  • Ensuring strict adherence to STAT Northern’s privacy policy, data handling standards, and the company’s cancellation policy.
  • Facilitating effective communication with students to discuss plans, goals, and any concerns they might have.
  • Collecting and integrating student feedback to enhance the mentoring service.
  • Completing detailed reports and timesheets for each mentoring session.
  • Engaging in ongoing personal and professional development to maintain high-quality mentoring standards.

Essential Criteria:

  • 1-year experience of Specialist Mentoring for DSA Mental Health students
  • Ability to employ a variety of mentoring techniques and frameworks tailored to individual needs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build trust and rapport with students.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in various mentoring scenarios.
  • Commitment to professional ethics, including confidentiality and respect for individual differences.
  • Proficiency in using AT packages is advantageous.
  • Holding a current DBS certificate.

Requirements for Mentors working with Mental Health students:

  • Professional Body Membership e.g. BACP, BPS, SWE etc.
