McCourt School of Public Policy

The Massive Data Institute (MDI) at Georgetown’s McCourt School of Public Policy harnesses modern data and computing power to produce cutting edge social science, computer science, and data science research that improves public policy decision making.
The MDI Front End Developer designs and develops user-facing web pages and components, from wireframing to deployment. This is a role on a small nimble team of data-centric software developers who build software to support MDI research initiatives, including faculty data science research. The incumbent applies creativity, design principles, and UX practices to create simple, clean, performant user interfaces.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Create wireframes to prototype user interface designs.
- Iterate on proposed designs using feedback from colleagues and testers.
- Translate wireframes into code, contributing to projects hosted on GitHub.
- Collaborate with other developers for seamless integration.
- Revamp existing user interfaces to enhance their usability, accessibility and design.
- Design and develop data visualizations.
- Document design decisions.
Work Interactions
The MDI Front End Developer will interact with researchers of various departments and other technical staff. This position reports directly to MDI Director Lisa Singh, and the MDI Technical Manager oversees the day-to-day activity of the technical team, including this position.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (BA/BSc) in a relevant field
- 1-3 years of experience
- Proficiency with HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Awareness of User Experience (UX) principles and practices
- Ability to design User Interfaces (UI)
- Ability to use front end frameworks such as Bootstrap for clean layout
- Experience working with one or more front end frameworks like React, Vue, and Angular
- Ability to work on multiple different projects in parallel
- Skilled in, or strong interest in learning, data visualization tools and techniques
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing and developing user interfaces for data querying and/or search
- Experience with Git and GitHub workflows
- Experience with, or strong interest in, data-centric software design
- Experience with WCAG and accessibility standards
- Previous exposure to CI/CD practices and tools
- Previous exposure to cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure
- Experience working in an Agile project management environment and Jira software

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$54,616.00 - $100,493.33
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
