About the Role We’re looking for a friendly, capable Casual Front of House / Barista to join our team at The Commons. This is a hands-on role combining quality coffee making, front-of-house service, and beverage preparation in a fast-paced, people-focused environment. You’ll be responsible for delivering consistently great coffee and drinks, supporting café service during busy periods, maintaining a clean and well-run workspace, and creating a welcoming experience for members and guests. You’ll work closely with the wider team to keep daily operations running smoothly and uphold our service standards. This is a casual position, with flexibility to work across the café’s opening hours. Key Responsibilities Coffee & Beverage Preparation Prepare high-quality espresso coffee, milk-based drinks, and other beverages to recipe Prepare smoothies and protein drinks as part of daily beverage service Operate and maintain coffee machines, grinders, blenders, and related equipment Maintain consistency in taste, quality, and presentation Complete daily cleaning, weekly deep cleans, and basic equipment maintenance Front of House & Customer Service Greet members and guests warmly and provide friendly, efficient service Take orders, process payments, and provide menu guidance when needed Serve food and beverages and maintain a clean, welcoming service area Anticipate customer needs and resolve issues professionally Help foster a positive, community-driven atmosphere Operations & Stock Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering and restocking Support daily prep, stock rotation, and minimise wastage Maintain hygiene, food safety, and internal compliance standards Ensure the café/bar area is organised, clean, and fully operational Team Support Work collaboratively with the team during service Lead by example with a professional, positive attitude Support training of new team members when required Assist management with reasonable ad hoc duties Required Skills & Experience 1–2+ years’ experience in a café, canteen, juice bar or similar hospitality environment Strong espresso coffee skills and confidence using café equipment Experience with general food and beverage preparation Excellent customer service and communication skills Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment Strong attention to detail, organisation, and cleanliness Food Safety Certification (or willingness to obtain) Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 15–20kg Reliable, proactive, and team-oriented approach Values All actions and behaviours must align with the philosophy and values of The Commons: Putting our members first Fostering community Working together as a team Constantly learning and growing Benefits of working at The Commons Free counselling sessions Birthday & anniversary gifts State social committees with quarterly events ranging from pub drinks, picnics, bowling, movie screenings and beyond Additional paid maternity leave Exclusive annual Halloween party Further education program to support personal and professional development #LI-DNI
